What scapular to get?

So I recently have been sparked with the interest of wearing a scapular. I have a fair amount of research on them and have a good understanding about them. I know the brown scapular is the most common but I saw/read about many other ones. My question is can I get any one other than the brown one such as the green, passion, crusaders, or blue one? If so which one do you recommend. I am a runner so I wonder if there are any made for that? Also, if I got a brown one to start off with, could I switch to another color later on?

Best one is the Brown Scapular. It was given by our Lady to St Simon Stock.
She promised him: ‘Anyone who dies wearing this garment will not suffer eternal fire.’ They will not go to hell, but they still have to live a good life.

And she also appeared to another saint and gave the Saturday privilege, of anyone who wears the scapular and prays the Little Office of the virgin Mother daily will be delivered from purgatory the Saturday after they die. (Of course they have to live a good life too).

Also: Out Lady when she appeared in Fatima during the Miracle of the sun was seen holding the infant Jesus and a Brown Scapular and a Rosary. St Louis de Monfort wrote: ‘One day through the rosary and the brown scapular the Immaculate Heart will triumph.’

Many saints wore the brown scapular. Such as St. John Bosco and others, whose scapulars were found incorrupt when the saints tombs were opened. A miracle to show God’s grace of the brown scapular.

You need a priest to pray the enrolment prayer over you and bless your first scapular. The rest of your brown scapulars after your first brown scapular do not need the blessing because the blessing applies to the person. You can put a blessed medal on to the scapular string like the Holy Face medal or miraculous medal or st Benedict medal.

The brown scapular is part of the Order of Mt Carmel, whoever is enrolled shares in all the prayers of brown scapular wearers and mount Carmel religious nuns, brothers, priests, and laypeople, and received these prayers if they end up in purgatory.

The scapular has received much approval from popes, and during one of the world wars the soldiers were given scapular medals so they could have Our Lady’s grace

Each scapular has a completely different story and completely different graces I think. Some are attached to religious orders. Some have obligations attached, eg certain prayers daily.

I know the Green Scapular is like the miraculous medal, it can be put anywhere does not have to be worn, and was given by Our Lady to a chosen soul, many miracles, healings, conversions attached.

You can get a 5-way scapular, that is all the scapular stitched together onto one cord! That way you have all of them!

In fairness, to clarify a little here, there are some misconceptions with the Brown Scapular. Those are addressed here:

For example, the Church has long set Herself against the “Sabbatine Privilege,” that is, the Saturday Purgatory revelation, as it is unfounded, and the Carmelites hold today that it was unfounded. It is not good to promote the Sabbatine Privilege, although it is so popular that it continues to be perpetuated despite the fact that the Church does not approve of it.

Also, to the best of my knowledge and to the best of Google searches, it was simply said “…the Rosary and the scapular…” but not explicitly the brown scapular.

The Carmelites also doubt the historicity of any investment of the scapular to St. Simon Stock. For reasons explained in the link.

Nevertheless, any approved Scapular is worthy of devotion, including (and especially) the Brown Scapular. If anything, its rocky history is almost a testimony to its beauty today.

For scapulars that are easy to pin down, historically speaking, look to the Green, Red (Passion) and Blue (Immaculate Conception), and perhaps a few others.

The Green Scapular is not actually a scapular, it’s more of a necklace in scapular form, and it needn’t be worn, but can be placed in a home. It is more-or-less property of the Daughters of Charity. If you seek to obtain it, and I would, if I were you, please obtain it through the Daughters of Charity, as they are the official caretakers of this scapular. It was Sister Justine Bisqueyburu who had the revelation, and the Daughters of Charity would be happy to share that with you if you contact them.

The Red Scapular of the Passion was also revealed to a Daughter of Charity. Although I’ve read it was entrusted to the Lazarists (another of the Vincentian family), I can find no information on the Red Scapular from the Vincentians. The Daughters of Charity promote it, however, and I believe you need have nothing to do with the Lazarists to obtain it.

The Blue Scapular of the Immaculate Conception is currently promoted by the Marians. It was revealed to the Ven. Ursula Benincasa I believe. Now, the Blue Scapular is a little harder to obtain, because they regulate it. You either become part of the Archconfraternity of Theatine Fathers, to which there are not many obligations, or the Confraternity of the Blue Scapular, to which there are more obligations. You also need to have the Scapular endowed on you by the Marians, or by someone delegated by the Marians (as opposed to the Green and Red, which any priest can bless). Pius XII told a very large audience to wear the Brown Scapular as a sign of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Our Lady asked for this consecration in the last apparition at
Fatima, when She appeared as Our Lady of Mount Carmel, holding the Brown Scapular out to the whole world. It was Her last moving appeal to souls to wear Her Scapular as a sign of

When you buy a brown scapular (get about 3 of them) because they can break and you’ll need a replacement.
Also: the brownscapular comes with a little leaflet that has an ‘enrolment prayer’ which joins you to the Brown Scapular confraternity for life. Ask a priest to read this leaflet enrolment prayer over you (and you will need a bottle of holy water for him to bless you and your first scapular. If a priest blesses you without the holy water it’s not really the correct blessing. Objects need to be blessed with holy water by a priest to become sacramentals.

The brown scapular I have has plastic on both sides over the scapular picture. I really advise getting this type of scapular. Reason being that if you have been wearing a scapular for a year, the white picture part of the scapular gets really dirty, and looks awful if seen by others. But the plastic covered scapulars are comfortable and don’t get dirty even after wearing for a whole year.

I wear a brown scapular when I sleep, and a St. Joseph scapular during the day. I purchase mine through Rose Scapular because they also have a Benedictine medal and small cross attached to them. I also wear a Benedictine cross, and a Miraculous Medal during the day, and carry a Benedictine Rosary with case in my left pocket. I figure I need as much spiritual protection as I can.

One more question…can I remove the scapular when i go for a run?

Well, we never know the day nor the hour. I usually only take my scapular off during the shower. If I die during my sleep, I want to make sure I am wearing the scapular at the moment of death. Not to be too dreary, but you can never be too safe. I hope that I will have a scapular and a Rosary on my person when I stand before the throne on my Judgment Day. Goodness knows I’ll need as much protection from the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and St. Michael as can be provided.

Well since every new Scapular does not to be re-blessed because the blessing is applied to the person and not the item… why would it be necessary to wear it constantly?
Would not the Scapular be the outward symbol of the blessing the person has received?

Also, would not God’s grace protect you rather Mary, Joseph, and or Michael? They would stand as witness but protect? How? against God Almighty?

There is no such thing as a “best” scapular. Rather, scapulars and the devotions are fitted to the person.

Also, scapulars are to be worn “habitually” in which it helps to think of a nun’s habit. Nun’s don’t sleep and shower in their habits.

I am not sure about all nuns but I know at least some where this little white cap thing when they sleep.

Sister Lucia was quoted as saying that “The Rosary and the Scapular are inseparable”. You must be enrolled by a priest (and my understanding is that ANY priest is authorized) with a procedure found here:

Procedure for the Blessing and Investiture of the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

To be eligible for THE SCAPULAR PROMISE, one must be enrolled in the Family of Carmel.
This is a simple ceremony, which takes only a moment and can be done by any Carmelite or
duly authorized priest. The words used by the priest when enrolling a person in the
Confraternity of the Scapular are as follows:

Priest - Show us, O Lord, Thy mercy.

Respondent - And grant us Thy salvation.

Priest - Lord, hear my prayer.

Respondent - And let my cry come unto Thee.

Priest - The Lord be with you.

The first Scapular must be blessed and imposed by a Priest using the (above) formula
contained in the Roman ritual for reception into the Confraternity of the Scapular.

I’m not a runner, but I suspect you won’t have any problems while jogging provided your shirt is fairly tight.

Pope Pius XII, St. Alphonsus, St. Bosco, and St. Maximilian Kolbe are just a few of the saints devoted to Our Lady’s brown scapular.

According to Tradition, various scapulars like the Carmelite (brown), Theatine (blue), Trinitarian etc. were given from Heaven by Our Lord or Our Lady to various religious orders to wear as part of their habits. Over the years, smaller abbreviated forms were made and the heads of the various orders extended the privilege to the Faithful who would be enrolled in the respective Confraternities, thereby sharing in the promises from Heaven and sharing also in the prayers and sacrifices of the particular Orders the habit belongs to.
I was enrolled in the 5 fold scapular in 2001,a Redemptorist scapular, which according to Tradition all 5 were given from Heaven to various Religious Orders with various promises for wearing them. Having said all this, No Scapular is a substitute for being a Roman Catholic in the STATE OF GRACE! Scapulars are Sacramentals and not a guarantee of salvation or a substitute for practicing virtue. Yes, by all means take advantage of the Sacramentals of the Church, but for crying out loud, if you have to shower and you know that you are in a state of Grace,(as everyone should be), take it off and wash up, then put it back on when you’re done!
