What shall a vegetarian do on the Fridays in Lent?

I am a vegetarian. The Church has prescribed that people abstain from meat on the Fridays in Lent. Since I don’t eat meat or fish, I am not really doing anything different these days. I want to do something, but I don’t know what. Any ideas?

Eat meat during lent every day except Friday. 🙂

Or maybe adopt a monks diet of cheese, bread and water for a meal. The main thrust of it is to make a conscious sacrifice of your diet to remind yourself that you are to wear a sackcloth during lent. Or do a dedicated corporal work of mercy or charity on Friday. Or just eat meat at least one day a week during Lent. I like that one best. What are you trying to do? Put all the cattle ranchers out of business? 😃

I know your question is serious. My advise is just to be happy that you are a vegetarian.

You could give up one of your favorite dish on Fridays. It is hard to give up some of our favorite foods.

YES…DO A GOOD DEED EVERY DAY AND NOW ON FRIDAY AS TR SPECIFIED IN THE BOY SCOUT CODE! BUT WHEN YOU DO THIS DEED DONT HANG AROUND FOR ANY THANKYOU…BUT TAKE OFF ON YOUR WHITE STEED! YOU SEE SOME POOR SOUL IN A STORE …OBVIOUSLY DOWN AND OUT…SNEAK UP BEHIND HIM OR HER…DROP A CRUMPLED $5 DOLLAR BILL ON THE FLOOR…SAY…HEY …LOOK.PLEASE BE MORE CAREFUL YOU DROPPED THIS…HAND EM THE MONEY AND TAKE OFF…THE MEAT ETC IS JUST SYMBOLIC FOR SELF DISCIPLINE…AS A FIRST GENERATION ITALO-AMERICAN WE HAD LITTLE MEAT ANYWAY…SO ON FRIDAYS IT WAS USUALLY FRIED PEPPERS ETC…THE AIM IS TO SUFFER A BIT AS JESUS DID…DO WITHOUT YOUR FAV.SIT-COM…ETC ETC…AS THE TWIG IS BENT…

As someone who also doesn’t eat meat, on Fridays I emphasize the fasting part of Lent. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday I eat nothing but do consume liquids. All other Fridays I only eat one light meal well after dark.

Think about keeping meals simple. Eat one thing instead of two. Or don’t eat during daylight hours. Eat the same meal every week instead of having variety.

Focus on performing works of mercy. Add spiritual reading.

I’m not sure if you’re an ovo-lacto vegetarian or a strict vegetarian (vegan).

If the former, you could give up eggs and dairy on Fridays.

FWIW, in the Eastern Churches, especially among very observant Orthodox, the Lenten diet is basically vegan.

Plain TOFU and only Plain TOFU ? 😃

I second the idea of performing some other sacrificial or penitential act … attending your parish’s stations of the cross service and serving the soup and helping with cleanup every Friday [if they have that tradition]

Working at a soup kitchen on Fridays …

Spending an hour in prayer for your parish [or other cause]…

Something like that … 👍

When all else fails, more prayer and devotions can be done. How about a Stations Of The Cross every Friday? Or even a full 20 decade rosary? Or some other prayers and chaplets?

Or…and this may be too tough for most Americans…no TV, radio, or movies on Friday. 🙂

Go vegan. I’m a carnivore, myself, but one lent I gave up meat. I slipped one day and ate a hot dog, and to make up for it, I spent one day as a vegan. Hardest day of all of lent.
Or look at whatever your most common food is to eat (that you like) and go without it on Fridays.

I have decided to abstain from dairy products on Fridays. It would be hard for me to go vegan because I am allergic to soy.
