DISCLAIMER! THIS IS NOT A THREAD TO DISCUSS MEDJUGORJE! MEDJUGORJE IS A BANNED TOPIC IIRC!

Several years ago, I went to a Methodist thrift store and saw that they had Rosaries. I had no idea what Medjugorje was at the time so I just thought it was some sort of Polish Rosary. I was very wrong. Medjugorje is not Polish, nor is it approved by the Church. I refuse to use a Rosary that is part of a thing not approved by the Church. I don’t know what to do with this thing. I posted a thread about this years ago, so I figure I might as well post a new thread.

Should I burn it/bury it? Or should I just keep it and never use it?

You can bring it to the parish office and give it to them if you don’t want it and don’t know what to do with it.🤷

I would take it to a priest and have it blessed and use it.

If you don’t want to use it, can you still have it blessed and leave it in a church or chapel for someone who maybe doesn’t have a rosary to take?

If you just want to get rid of it all together, bury it.

A rosary is a rosary, it’s not a part of Medjugorje. It was just made, bought or procured there. Have it blessed and use it, or give it away.

Thanks for the replies! 😃

I’ll probably get it blessed and leave it on a table in one of the parishes I visit (they have Rosaries on the tables there.) How can I go about getting it blessed? Do I ask Father after a Mass?

Yep, that’ll do it…you could also replace the centerpiece and use it!

That is exactly what I have done, very easy to do! I would NOT pass it on as someone else will have the same problem you have!! God Bless, Memaw

😃 (chuckling at your Disclaimer).

I have thought along the same lines, now and then. At times, having acquired a religious artifact, have thought whether the time and place the item was bought, could somehow impede the spiritual goodness one could draw from it, in the present, or even be negatively affected by it, even. There is such a thing as ‘diabolic infestation’ but I don’t think it is necessary to start going down that route.

My response would be to do as another poster has suggested, and have it blessed (or re-blessed). This would probably do away with any malefic tie (if there is one). This is what I have had done to the artifacts I was concerned about.

In terms of using it when and where, you might not wish to promote something you don’t believe in, and therefore, if the item was a gift, you might not wish to use it in front of the person who gave the gift, if you haven’t shared with them your opinions to do with the place from which the item was originally bought.

There is nothing wrong with the Rosary. The Rosary itself is personal prayer practice and not an obligation unless it was prescribed as a penance by your priest. Put a piece of tape over it or remove it. It is the PRAYER AND INTENT that are important, not beads. You know this, right? Peace.

👍👍

I’m sure many of the rosaries people have were made in countries that don’t share the values the rosary represents. So as CB Catholic said, a rosary is a rosary. Your prayers are no more or less valid because of the beads in your hand.

Obviously, this can only be taken so far. I would not feel comfortable using a Rosary that openly blasphemed God in some way, and frankly, it would be sinful to do so. If someone is convinced praying on a Medjugorje Rosary is an act of disobedience and that it offends God, we shouldn’t encourage them to go against their conscience.

Dear Lormar,

This is an excellent answer. 🙂

Just because the apparition at Medjugorje is not approved by the Church, it does not mean that the city of Medjugorje (or “Medjugoogoo” as an irreverent friend of mine calls it… :D) is some sort of den of reprobates under some sort of Papal Interdict. I am sure there are many fine and devout souls there, both religious and laymen.

A Rosary is a Rosary.

If you (the “OP”) suffer from scruples, discuss it with a priest.

I don’t know why people worry about stuff like this. Isn’t it just another level of distraction from prayer, to worry about things like this?

The disclaimer was kind of over the top and hurt my eyes.

The Church has spoken about Medjogorje, so in my opinion, I would dispose of it, in different ways, depending if I had it blessed or not. I wouldn’t give it away because that would be an advertisement for something that is inappropriate.

I disagree. For the average Catholic in the world, “Medjugorje” on a Rosary will almost certainly reference them to the unapproved apparitions, and not to the city. It would be like if I labeled a Rosary “Albuquerque” or “Tampa Bay” or “Memphis”. That would be unusual and people don’t generally do that. So when “Medjogorje” is seen on a Rosary, the intention is understood. Likewise, when “Lourdes” or “Fatima” or “Jerusalem” are on a Rosary, it is understood they are referring to either Marian apparitions or where Jesus endured his Passion, and not to geography/social studies.
