What should a baby be dressed in for baptism?

Hello. I have a beautiful 5-month-old baby boy. I arranged for him to be baptized at the same church I had been baptized in. The baptism is arranged for this coming Sunday. For the past month or so, I’ve been watching for christening outfits for him. Now I see that there isn’t any store in our city or the closest city that will fit him. If I order one (which I wasn’t expecting to have to do), it will take over a month to arrive.

I called the church secretary to see if she had any ideas or if it was okay if he would wear a suit. She said no, it wasn’t okay, and with a tone that wasn’t terribly Christian, told me he can’t be baptized in a suit. Clearly, I was shocked, so she said she would check with the Father and get back to me. I still haven’t heard back from her.

I’m feeling like this woman is judging me and worse, my baby, and that I don’t want to be involved with a community that refuses to baptize a baby because of the color of his clothes. I’m not sure what to do. Another church? Any ideas?

The church secretary overreacted on a matter of social protocol and mistakenly conflated etiquette with Church law. As a matter of Western social protocol, male babies usually are not dressed in suits for formal occasions. Traditionally, that is why both male and female babies were dressed in christening gowns in the first place. Be that as it may, the Church does not refuse baptism to babies based on the outfits their parents dress them in. Dress your baby in whatever nice, clean outfit you believe to be appropriate.
