My husband and I recently welcomed our beautiful son into the world. The birth was complicated. I had to have a cesarean section which was very difficult according to my doctor.
My obstetrician tells me that I should not get pregant again for at least a year so the scar can heal completely. He was adamant about this, saying that if I get pregnant before that time, I risk losing both the baby and my uterus.
What am I to do now? Is it permissible to temporarily use birth control in this situation?

Birth control is an intrinsic evil, so no.

Either abstinence or periodic abstinence (NFP) are the moral options.

You can use family planing method. Birth Control will cause terrible damage inside your body. I don’t know if condom is allow but i would go with this over birth Control. You could consult with a priest on this matter.

As for your health, take my word and research live organic food. Raw live food assist your body in so so many ways. Consider a detox also etc… If not, at least eat tone of fresh fruit and vegetable (raw), leafy greens, sprout etc… Make room for the good stuff always. I did a 60 days on live food, thinking that i was starting to have menopause because i was 40 and missing one ovary, BUT nop, i was simply pregnant and give birth to a very healthy little girl. Live food is a gift from God. You cannot give life with dead food. Cook food and especially animal food, lead to aging. Dr. Ann Wingmore was diagnosed with Cancer at age 50 and had gray hair. She went back to eat the food she learned as a child. At age 70, she has no gray hair. Anyway, you can research her. I believe her web is .org (Costa Rica).

All the best!

I am sorry for your difficult medical situation.

Practice periodic continence using natural family planning or complete abstinence until you are in the clear if you deem it necessary.

If by “birth control” you mean contraception-- no. Contraception is a grave sin against the sixth commandment.

Contact your local parish family life office or your diocesan family life office regarding natural family planning (NFP) if you did not learn it before you married.

FYI- Giving medical advice is agasint forum rules.

I’ve heard that many women maintain a state of infertility while breast feeding a newborn. It is one aspect of the practice of NFP as well, if I’m correct. Have you practiced NFP before? Have you had classes on NFP?

NFP, when done correctly, I’ve heard, can be just as, or even more, effective than contraception.

Look up information on NFP

You may not use an artificial birth control, no. To do so is against Church teaching and is, in all circumstances regarding fertility, a mortal sin. However, this is where you can employ Natural Family Planning to avoid pregnancy. My first child was brought into the world in very similar circumstances, and we had to avoid pregnancy for at least a year for medical reasons. NFP, when used properly, is just as effective–if not more so–than any artificial means you can come by. Aside from the morality (which is hugely important) and the accordance with the Church (also hugely important), NFP is much healthier for your body, your spirit, and your marriage.

You are in my prayers!

Hmm. Birth control, maybe (because it isn’t limited to contraception by definition), but contraception no. Not to confuse anyone but NFP /is/ birth control (you are controlling births, ergo birth control). /However/, birth control is not limited to contraception (condoms, pills, inter-uterine devices, patches, etc) as these good people have pointed out and I think that’s what you’re truly asking.

I personally recommend the Creighton Model because it has high success of either conceiving or avoiding pregnancy according to how you use it. It is very scientific and based on observations you make. You can still have a healthy sex life with your husband and avoid pregnancy by abstaining from sex during the very few fertile periods. I really like that it works with your body’s natural rhythm, it isn’t invasive, and it doesn’t mask fertility problems like taking certain contraception would. And if you do develop fertility problems, you can see a NaPRO doctor with your Creighton Model data and be diagnosed/treated very quickly. If you don’t live near a Creighton Model practitioner, some of them are more than willing to Skype ‘classes’ over the internet to help you and send you the paperwork in the mail.

I have also heard good things about the Billington’s method which like the Creighton Model works with your body’s natural fertility. I think it uses your basal body temperature to help predict fertility (during ovulation, your body temp raises slightly), but I don’t know much more about it.

I want to be clear that contraception is against Catholic teaching. Contraceptive pills, patches,inter-uterine devices work by going against the body’s natural rhythm and tricking your body into thinking you are pregnant. The body, then, aborts the conceived fetus by not allowing it to attach to the uterine wall. There are many ill-effects of contraception not widely published. I recommend checking out 1flesh.org. While condoms do not mess with fertility cycles, they have a decently high failure rate (I know several people with “condom” children).

I hope this helps you. Good luck and congratulations on your son’s birth.
