Should women work? Stay at home? Be independent? What role should a woman play in society? This question can be for any culture, but mainly for western ones.

A woman’s “role” should be whatever she & God decide is best for her. No one else’s opinion matters.

An individual should discern his or her gifts and then figure out how to best use them to give glory to God.

Vocation also matters. A person’s role in society will necessarily depend on whether they are called to be married, single, a priest, or religious.

There are some groups that assert that everyone in a particular group is called to do one thing (e.g. all women must be married and be stay-at-home moms), but Catholics have never held this to be true - otherwise why would we have nuns and religious sisters? And not all of them serve the same communities or do the same work, etc.

Whatever she chooses. If I had kids I would work and that’s my choice.

I say a woman can do whatever she wants so long as it’s not breaking any commandments.

That being said if either a man or woman gets married and has kids one of the parents needs to stay home with the kids if at all possible.

Some women should work
Some women should stay at home
Some women should be consecrated religious
Some women should be married
Some women should be mothers
Some women should wear dresses
Some women should wear pants
Some women should wear yoga pants at the gym
Some women should be doctors
Some women should be politicians
Some women should be engineers
Some women should be builders
Some women should serve in the police
Some women should serve in the armed forces
Etc…

A few things women shouldn’t do, which unfortunately have become common in Western society today and even called “women’s rights”:

Have a same-sex relationship
Have sex outside of marriage
Abort any pregancies
Contracept
Participate in prostitution or pornography (noting that many who do so may not really choose this for themselves)

To live a good moral happy life! And make me food (something everyone should do).

oh Johnny…you don’t really want to go down this road do you???

🍿

Stranger: “So what do you do for a living?”

Me: “Oh, I I have extra-marital affairs to get pregnant and then have abortions.”

Stranger: “…”

Stranger: “How do you find it?”

Me: “It could do with a union.”

I was told that I could be anything I wanted to be. I’ve come to understand that it has to be reasonable. Like, I really would love to be a princess, but I’m from America, it’s just not going to happen.

A woman’s role should be equal to that of a man, if you can do it , then do it,

Should men work? Stay at home? Be independent? What role should a man play in society? This question can be for any culture, but mainly for western ones.

Try that one for size, Johnny. Are you writing a paper or stirring the pot with another one of your questions?

The question was about a “woman’s role in society”…not merely about one’s occupation. The choices we make regarding such things as relationships, sex outside of marriage, abortion, etc, all affect society as a whole. These are not merely personal matters that don’t affect society.

If it is merely about occupations - I can’t off the top of my head think of any that women should not fill (perhaps front-line military, but this is arguable). This is not to say that some are more generally filled by men (eg building and other manual labour) and others more generally filled by women (eg pre-school teaching).

I think one of the most important rolls women need to play is to be Mothers. Physical mothers. Spiritual mothers. All other things should come out of that.

As humans, as part of the church, the bride of Christ, all of us need to be receptive to the will of God. Receptivity is a very feminine trait. When a woman receives her husband, they create life. When the Church receive God, it, too, bears life. Women have a lot to teach men about receptivity.

We need strong, faithful women in every facet of society, because we men can be pretty thick sometimes 😊

In the strongest possible terms, as a man I find the entire thread offensive, because it suggests that women shouldn’t have some role in society: asking what a role should be implies that an answer could be “no role!”

Can I start my own thread? “what role should high school students have in society? Should anyone pay any attention to them until they work a bit and have some experience in the real world to demonstrate they’re worth paying attention to?”

But I have better things to do.

In all seriousness Johnny, why**** are you asking this? Have you been lurking around radical blogs or websites that insist women should have nothing more than a homeschooled or private, all-girls high school education and forego any form of higher learning since her only role needs to be of a wife and mother? Yep, there are some “Catholic” blogs and webpages out there that spew out that opinion. If that’s what is going on with you, stay away from them. NONE are faithful to the Magisterium…no matter how many pretty nostalgic holy card images they have on their site or claim they have the secret for changing the world.

Next, if you want to see what a faithful Catholic wife and mother can look like outside the home, take a look at St Gianna Beretta Molla. She was a wife, mother, and medical doctor…back in a time (the 1950’s and 60’s) when women weren’t often doctors and those that worked outside the home did so only in a necessity. She was married to a successful businessman, so money wasn’t a concern, but she still worked several days a week in her clinic, even after having her first 2 children. She took care of the poor and needy in her Italian village. She was extremely prolife and declined an abortion when it was discovered she had a tumor that threatened her own life. She chose a less invasive treatment for it, but nonetheless, died of a massive infection shortly after giving birth to her youngest daughter, who herself became a physician, specializing in care of the elderly and Alzheimer’s patients. Dr Beretta Molla was declared a SAINT. That should show that woman can certainly aspire to and achieve many things in life and society. What is important to remember is the good doctor knew what her first priorities were and she fulfilled them with love.

As another already stated “A woman’s “role” should be whatever she & God decide is best for her. No one else’s opinion matters.” So whether a woman aspires to be another St Gianna or simply attend trade school or college and get married and raise a family without taking a paid job ever, that is not for any of us to determine or make claims on what a women’s role should be, now is it?
