My RCIA secret Santa is on Tuesday and I have no idea what to get for the person I’ve selected. All I know is she’s a woman and she’s a cradle catholic who is very involved in the parish. My Dad said I should just get her a gift certificate to the pharmacy or coffee shop but I feel that’s impersonal. I was considering giving a donation in her name to covenant house (a catholic run shelter for homeless and at risk youth) but I feel as though I should actually get her a gift she can use? (Don’t worry, I’m giving a donation to the charity either way!)
I’m running out of time here! Heeeellllp!
I’m also stumped on what to get for my sponser. I am so so indecisive when it comes to gift buying.
ETA: the limit is $10!

Gas cards for both - and for your sponsor, also a nice hand written note.

Do you have a Catholic store near you? If so, that would be a great place to look. You could get them a nice book…a devotional, or something general by St. Francis deSales, GK Chesterton, etc. (probably want to steer away from obvious titles like *Story of a Soul *since they likely have them already) and a pretty cloth or metal bookmark.

Stores like that usually have lots of neat little odds and ends, too…I’m sure you’d be able to find something cool! 🙂

And when in doubt, candy or other food-related items are usually appreciated. 😃 Good luck!

How about a little Christmas decoration that has personal meaning for both of you - maybe a saying on it that you both like, or on a theme that is of interest to you both?

Ohh my sponsor really loves butterflies, thanks for the idea! 😃 Still stumped on the other lady though, I don’t know the first thing about her…

Gift cards are not THAT impersonal. People do use them. I recommend getting an actual gift rather than making a donation and calling it a gift.

A mug or a cookie jar filled with coffee, tea, or candy is always nice. Does your parish have any upcoming concerts or events for Christmas or New Years for which you could purchase a ticket? Are there any parish fund raisers which involve selling something she might like?

Personally, I would go with a Christmas tree ornament. Easy to find something really nice for that price range and maybe even have it personalized. You know they both celebrate Christmas;)

Gas card is a gift card or gift certificate for a particular gas station.

Scratch that though… I like the idea of an ornament better.

Ornament is nice, IF you know her tree decorating taste. I’ve a family member who has a tree where everything matches. If someone gave her the most beautiful ornament in earth, it would end up in a box because it would not match the color scheme.

Unless you know someone, a gift card or certificate is wise. Movie theatre gift cards make a great gift as does a $10 book of postage stamps, $10 of bus or subway tokens…

Please reconsider this. I worked at Covenant House for a year and a half. None of my money will ever go there and I had to leave because of some of the un-Christan things that were going on there, not to mention that I was watching a baby for a mom to go get an abortion (I was under the impression she was going on a job interview) and she was taken there by a worker from CH. There are many, many wrong things going on there and I would think twice about giving money to them.

Just a heads up even though you weren’t really asking about that 🙂

I did not know that. I will definitely look into it closer.

Anyways, I really like the suggestion for the ornament, so I think that’s what I’ll do, thanks for all the help everyone!

 . I used to give to Covenant House - years ago when it was first started. I did not know these things were happening there now!

To stay on topic - Secret Santa gift could be an inspirational book, an inspirational calendar (either pocket/purse size one or full size one). Ornament with a stand, small nativity scene, pretty candle (unscented - you don’t know if she has allergies).

My RCIA sponsor got me a “calendar” called Through the Year with Pope Benedict XVI. It’s a desk calendar that has a brief point made by the Pope in some of his homilies. I have it on my desk and read it every day. It’s great.

An ornament would be a nice gift. Although personally, I would get a gift card. Just MHO. 🙂

I second the ornament idea.

If she does have a theme tree, she can always put it out on a side table. Just make sure you get one that will sit as well as hang.

As a second idea, how about a nice bookmark? I just received one from my Godson at his Baptism. It is really nice, with a cross on it. I would guess it was about $10.00. I bet you could find something like that at a nice card store.
