Hi I am a young woman in childbearing years. I have been told since my teens that I would never have children. I did however about 4 years ago give birth to a beautiful and very healthy baby girl. She is a huge blessing in my life. She however was conceived out of wed lock with my now husband. We did not marry due to the pregnancy and we were married after she was born. I have been to confession about this issue during my pregnacy and we were married in the church. Both my husband and I are catholic. We were both Catholic before our marriage, he a cradle catholic, me a convert several years before we married. I am now faced with the issue of my infertility. I have had medically speaking no ovulation since the birth of our daughter. I have been having some medical problems over the last year that have not been able to be resolved with medication or hormone therapy. I have recently strated listening to Catholic radio and want very much so to live my life accourdingly. I am concerned with making decisons regarding my health that will go inline with the teachings of the church. I was recently told I will not be able to concieve again. I have been told I need to make a decision about having a hysterectomy or emoblization or possibly try fertility treatments, but not all are an option for me. I am not interested in doing any labratory type treatments, for I could not live with the fact that a baby was created in a dish and some would not survive due to my desire to have children, but I wonder about medication treatment? Is this something the church is against? Also I have a horrible problem with feeling that due to the way I led my life in the past that God is not blessing my marriage with children. My husband comes from a wonderful family. They do not understand why we are not having anymore children. They are always asking and it is very painful. I feel so much pressure. I read on your website some article on infertiity and that it is possibly a blessing from God? I guess I am not sure. I want my daughter to grow up with a good moral background unlike the one I had growing up. I want her to have a wonderful family. I would love for her to have siblings. I am not unsatisfied with her, she makes me and my husband so happy. We truly feel she is a blessing and gift and we have been happy about her since the day we found out about her even though our situations was not ideal. I guess I do not feel after such a wonderful blessing as her that I have the right to ask God for anymore children when she was trully a miracle that was medically speaking not suppossed to happen. I am really struggling here. I also wonder if I was to have or consider surgery such as the hysterectomy what is the church’s positon on that? Please help@!!!

Hi,

Since the doctors were very wrong in the past, they could be again. Every child is a miracle. Our Lord told us to ask. So ask for more children with the understanding that what you want most is whatever He wants.

The Church allows medication treatments and also a hysterectomy if it is medically necessary. Your past sins have been forgiven. God is quite capable of washing the slate clean. To dwell on past sins is to doubt His love. Look at a crucifix each day and thank Him for loving you that much. Reflect on all of His wounds. He would undergo all that again for you if it were necessary. Keep you attention on Him and you will be fine.
