For some time now my parish has had “liturgical dancers” perform during mass. This is an all female dance group; they are barefoot and dressed in white gowns. They perform choreographed dance routines on the sacristy to the music that is played during mass. I have never liked this addition to the mass. I originally thought that this was just something associated with the Sunday night teen mass, but more and more I have seen it at other masses as well. Recently the dancers performed at the Sunday 11:00 mass. More and more I think that the only mass that they do not perform is the mass that I usually attend, Sunday 9 am mass.
About a month ago, I called my Diocesan Office of Liturgy and Worship and spoke with the head priest of the department. I complained about the liturgical dancing at my parish and asked him what the Bishop’s opinion was on liturgical dance. He said that liturgical dance was not allowed in our Diocese and that the Bishop was very concerned about this. He said that my parish was one of the last holdouts in the Diocese still doing this. He said that he had personally called our parish priest to inform him that this was not allowed and had sent him multiple letters telling him that liturgical dance was not permitted in the Diocese. He was shocked that this was still going on. He said he was planning on taking a trip out to are parish to talk to the priest directly in order to get him to comply.
Well, just last week there was liturgical dance at the 11 am mass again. At this point, I am starting to think that my parish priest is willfully disobeying the Bishop by allowing this liturgical abuse in our parish. I do not want to support a parish that is defiant to our Bishop and allows liturgical abuse. I do not know what to do. Should I say something to our parish priest? Should I tell others at our parish that the priest is disobeying the Bishop and perpetuating liturgical abuse? Should I call the Diocesan Office of Liturgy and Worship and them that liturgical dance is still going on? Should I simply just leave and find another parish?
