What should I do about this enigma?

I did not come to this board to challenge Creationism. I did not visit this web site to inquire about morality. I did not write this message to urge religious relativism. And I did not come to this forum for this message to be made public, but I would not care in the least if it were.

I am a 16-year-old male who attends a Catholic school in Massachusetts. I am now a junior. Recently, a speaker by the name of Jason Evert gave a presentation about chastity, sex, and relationships at my high school.

I understand that these forums are for the sake of answering questions in regards to the Catholic faith and helping others understand the doctrine. However, I come here today not to ask a question about the faith. I come here to seek direction in my life. Had I the opportunity to speak with Mr. Evert on the day of his presentation privately, I would have done so. I, unfortunately, did not get that opportunity and now do not know where to go. If you cannot help me with my problem, then I ask you direct me to contact someone who can.

I come, in lieu, for advice. There is a girl (who, for the sake of anonymity, we will call “Jesse”) who I have known for a number of years, since middle school. I always had a liking for her then, and over the course of years in high school, I’ve grown to love her for whom she is. I am not dating her and never have. I can’t explain why I have these feelings for her, but I know she is the only one who I have ever held true love for.

Jason spoke of true love. I couldn’t have agreed more with him when he said that you can know you truly love someone when you would not do anything to put them in danger, including premarital sex, and would wait a lifetime to be with them. If you name me any female walking the face of this earth other than Jesse, I will, in turn, name you one who I would not care to wait for. I know I would, however, wait for Jesse. I simply cannot feel complete with anyone else.

I don’t have many fears, but it terrifies me everyday to think that in a mere year and a half, when college begins, I may never see her again. The thought makes me, quite literally, sick to my stomach.

I don’t just think… I know that if I do not do something and lose her, I will regret it for the rest of my life. How do I know this? I know this because if I were to place any other girl in this example, I would be completely apathetic about losing them. I really don’t care about anyone else like I do about her.

So, now, I ask you this. What should I do? How should I tell her? What can I do to avoid this regret which would be inevitable?

I understand that you have an intrinsic instinct, as a Catholic apologist, to answer all of these questions with God. But what I need is advice about what to do, not who or what to pray to. The proximal reason why I am on this board now is because Jason Evert’s site (catholic.com/seminars/evert.asp) indirectly leads to it. If there were an e-mail address to him there, this message would be sent to it in lieu of here.

To you who is reading this right now, I appreciate any of your time which has been spent, and would appreciate ten-fold every second spent in response to it.

Even if nothing comes of my efforts in writing this message, it will, at the very least, be a source of catharsis – a bandage on a critically bleeding wound.

Dear Cathartic,

You have a lot of company. Many a guy has been in your situation, trying to get up the courage to break the ice and make contact with someone who could devastate him by just a negative glance. You didn’t mention if she actually knows you. The challenge would be a bit less if she did. What you need to do is say hi. What is important is that she knows that you exist and that you would like to get to know her better. You can do this. You really can. Don’t give up. If she matters to you as much as you have indicated, then she is worth the risk of learning that she is not interested in you. And even if she seems uninterested, keep at it. The only thing that you can be absolutely sure of is that nothing will happen if you don’t make contact. Don’t expect this to be easy. But you do need to stick your neck out if you really care about her. You are in my prayers.

Oh, and here is Jason’s email address: jason@catholic.com.
