I got a call back from the deacon from the catholic church who said the priest is busy, so he was retuning calls.
I told him why I was calling and he kept interrupting me everytime I said anything.
Me: I am calling to ask about baptism for myself and my 5yr old
Him: Youre NOT baptised?
Me: No. I was brought up by athiests, I was lazy and never cared before now
Him intterupting: Your parents are ATHEISTS??!!??
Yes, and well I was told I may also need a declaration of nullity
Him intterupting: youre DIVORCED??!!
I told him just have the priest call me back, because I feel a little insulted by your replies…
I think I hung up on him.

I just couldnt believe it. Now I want to leave a message to aplologize to the man, but I dont remember his name.😊

And, I dont know what to do!

Oh, I can understand your frustration --I hate being interrupted–but I do think there could be reasons that he did interrupt (some good and some not so good).

Some people are just not ‘good’ on the phone. Maybe he was filling in for the parish secretary (who usually does Father’s calls), or this was something he doesn’t do very often, and was trying to ‘follow’ guidelines for what the parish ‘needs to know’ and so he needed to be ‘sure’ that he got things down.

And it is so hard to judge tone sometime. You took “you’re NOT baptized” as “OHMYGOD, you ARE NOT baptized. . .that is so dang strange.” but it could have been, "ah, you are baptized, as in "Ok, so this isn’t a Catholic who has been baptized, and it isn’t a Protestant seeking RCIA so that I will need to know if it was a TRINITARIAN baptismal formula. . .this is a person who was not baptized. Check. I’ve got it down now.

And “Atheists” could have been him just ‘repeating’ so that he put it down right. And it does have a difference between, “well, my parents were baptized but they thought I should wait until I wanted to”. . . I mean, HE wasn’t asking you, “So, what are your parents? Atheists? OH MY GOD NO!”. . .he was just repeating back. . .which a lot of people do just to be sure they heard you properly because it is important for both of you that they DO get the info correctly.

But if you’re already nervous I know it could come across as ‘judgmental.’ Heck, it could even have been judgmental. Just because we’re Catholics doesn’t mean we are a judgemental jerk free zone. You’ve been on these forums long enough to have seen that !😃

But it still isn’t ‘official’ teaching. If the guy was a jerkaroo, it still isn’t going to interfere with YOUR exploration of the Church or YOUR reception of the sacraments. If he wasn’t. . .if it was an honest ‘misunderstanding’. . .well, you haven’t turned him into a pitiable wreck who will now throw away HIS faith. . .so relax.

Make yourself a nice cup of tea, realize that Satan really, really, really wants you to ‘give up’ and is going to do everything he can to put potential barriers in place. . .even if they are only barriers that you ‘think’ you saw or heard. HE doesn’t care if they’re real–he only wants to try to stop you from finding the truth. Don’t fear him–God is on your side–but remember, God will give you the strength and then it is up to YOU to TAKE that strength and do what you need to do.

We’re all pulling for you!!!

Try calling back later. If you do get the same fellow, just say, “I had called a little earlier, and I’m a little sensitive about this because this is all so new for me and I’m afraid that I may have been too quick earlier on the phone to get upset. Please try to understand, I don’t mean to be rude but this is all new and strange to me, and I feel like people are judging me when they repeat what I say. . .so is there some way that you and I can talk about some things in the church that will have both of us comfortable and understanding each other? I would so much appreciate that.” You make yourself clear, he isn’t operating ‘in the dark’, you both work together and nobody gets upset. 🙂

Personally, I think I would call the parish, ask to speak to the deacon, if you get the reply “which one” then by the process of elimination locate the deacon to whom you spoke, make your apology (it takes humility and courage…good for you) and request an appointment with the parish priest because you have personal issues you wish to resolve. I’ve known many parish priests and I believe, from my experiences with them, you will be very considerately treated and guided. God bless you on your journey.

He was most likely taking notes and just didn’t want you to get too far ahread of him.

Hmmmmm…now you know why we only Confess to Priests! 😉

Some folks just don’t have the ability to remain eloquent. If anything God sent you to shake him out of his comfort zone. He’s probably used to getting all those “greetings in the market place” and needed some edification!

Just keep asking questions and show up for whatever they give you. The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Keep in mind on that journey, some times we step in it!

Peace,

Gail

Okay, he could have been filling out a form. And, maybe his hearing is not great, and he replied louder on those words to make sure it was what I said.

Okay. I rather believe that, even if it was his shock because I like to stay positive when I can.👍

I will call agian monday because Sunday is a big busy day.

Good for you for not giving up. Maybe the man is getting old and having some problems in his responses to people.

I think it’s wonderful that you want yourself and your child baptised as Catholics even though you were raised athiests!
You are blessed! I ask God to give you and your child protection and joy, Trishie 🙂

Thanks Trishie, I like your signature line, its really nice:)

Call during normal business hours, and you should reach the Church Secretary. Tell the secretary that you wish to make an appointment to speak to the Priest. If the secretary asks for any more info, say politely that it is a pearsonal matter.

Do know that when meeting with a Priest, there is always a chance he will be called away on an emergency, so, do not take it personally if he has to reschedule.

Another good sig line!🙂

Well, I did call the secretary to leave for the priest to begin with. But, hes so swamped, the deacon is returning his calls, so thats why he called me to begin with.

I will call on Monday when its not as busy as Sunday, and see if I can apologize to this deacon, since I dont know what he was actually doing, and it doesnt matter, I just need a priest to call me back. He must be getting things ready in regard to the school and such things on top of the normal stuff.

I just hope, the priest is nothing like this to talk to. If so, there is another parish a bit farther (not much) but they dont have a school (if they do, I’d be surprised) and its in a real rich area, and I dont think I would be comfortable there anyway due to that.

One thing to remember, when speaking to some people, it is best to try to speak in their native language 😃

If you open up with “I am intersted in RCIA” - that is the secret code for “I would like to find out about baptism and becoming Catholic”.

Stick with it, I know you will find some nice people there.

One more thing, you might want to see if the Parish has a web site, they may have a copy of the bulletin or other info about the Parish on there, like who the person in charge of RCIA or the Director of Religious Education (another Catholic term for you :))

Two places you might find the web site - first is masstimes.org/dotnet/default.aspx.

Another is go here usccb.org/state.shtml and find your Diocese (that is the centralized headquarters of the Catholic Church in your area), from the Diocese web site, you should be able to find Parishes.

RCIA leaders and Directors of Religious Ed are usually very nice people, used to answering the questions you have.

It will be worth the search!

Heck, you are doing FINE 🙂

One prayer God always answers is when one prays “God, if you are real, show me the way to you!!”

I doubt it was shock - you may be uncomfortable but try to be charitable in your assessment of the way people react. Catholics are a varied lot, but we believe that Heaven rejoices the most when a sinner converts.

I was an atheist for 25 years, and my welcome back into the Church (revert, not convert) went smoothly. With any luck, your welcome will go well too!

I will pray this prayer!

Sometimes its just hard for me to think of what I can ask, as I feel like the only thing I should do, is tell him about me, and why I ignored Jesus, all this time, and why I am standing at attention now, but, I dont even know him well enough, to do this.

Hey, I have finnish roots. We dont talk about things (forget religious- just anything!!!)

We just suffer, and hope for the best. LOL.

I have been praying this Jesus prayer-

I found it on the net, I hope it is good. Sometimes I just ask Jesus if he knows how I did not outright reject him, but always saw him as merely a historical figure, I did not deny, but felt he failed.

Now, its all different. I dont believe he failed. I think, men fail.

but, I think he has a plan to make even the worst failed man, to possibly, be one he can do something with. For the good of all he claims he created, which, I think he actually did. He claimed so many things, no other did…

I know its either Jesus, or Atheism.

There is nothing else, in my heart or mind.

I dont nor ever believed in luck, but I appriciate your very kind reply, and I think its timely. My non catholic christian friend gave me a book, Treasure in Clay. Sheen. She said, if she could only be a catholic, he would be the only reason to be!

Must be a good guy. I ought to read it. I have right now, a CCC, and that. And the unworthy, net. but everyone here has been really good, even if I disagree with some things, I have found such nice people here, I feel like its so normal to be in a christian mindset. It just feels so, warm. I guess, it really feels like something I wish I had known more fully about before.

I must read this Fulton Sheen book. Its supposed to be funny too.

I like humor. I like real life. Not stories of people like my namesake, Monica- who makes me feel inadequate.

…SNIP…

The book Case for Christ was what helped chip away my objections to a belief in God. (The emotional ones left me after many years, and they were my trigger into atheism.) At the end of the book (written by a former atheist), he mentioned that the intellectual arguments could only being you so close to belief, but that you needed something that would help you make the leap solidly into faith. Of course, he couldn’t really say what it was.

So there I was, waiting and wondering. I had taken to watching ‘Life is Worth Living’ reruns on EWTN. This is Archbishop Sheen’s TV show from the 50s. One day, I noticed that both he and Pope B16 had a certain quality to their faces. As I thought more about it, I realized that it was Love that shined from their faces.

It hit me - if they could show such great Love, and I could respond to it… It seemed that it was merely a reflection of a greater Love. How could I NOT adore the One who both Sheen and B16 adored?

Like any emotional response, it doesn’t translate well into words, and actually sounds kinda’ lame. But nonetheless, in a split second I went from a somewhat-atheist who wanted to believe, to a child of God.

Back to your point about St Monica making you feel inadequate (which I can fully understand), perhaps you should read a bit on St. Therese, the “Little Flower”. In brief, her thinking was that she was just an insignificant person, but that God could help her to become what He wanted her to be. She decided that while she could not do big things, she could do little things and do them well. She has a big following because I think her point resounds in all of us.

I’ve found that the 19th/20th century saints are easier to relate to. One of my favorites is St. Maximilian Kolbe, the Saint of Auschwitz. There are many writings about him, but I would recommend getting your hands on A Man For Others if you could. The subtitle is “In the words of those who knew him”. The author interviewed his family, friends, and death camp survivors to tell his story. While it might make you feel inadequate (it does for me!), I found that I’ve thought about it for months.

I was also going to suggest “The Case for Christ” by Strobel. 👍

Another would be “Mere Christianity” and “Miracles” by C. S. Lewis.

Both of these should be at your Public Library, or they can get them for you.

Treasure in Clay is the life story of Bishop Fulton Sheen. His books, his TV shows (you can see them on EWTN on cable or satellite) - the man is a gifted author. His “Life of Christ” is one of my favorite books. You can never go wrong reading Sheen.

You could also ask Bishop Sheen to pray for you on this journey - during his life, he brought so many people to Christ, it would be very appropriate to ask him to Pray for you.

Bishop Sheen, pray for us.

You feel YOU need to apologize?🤷

This ‘Deacon’ sounds like an embarrassment to the Church. I sympathise, it’s people like this that drove me away. They use their position of authority to belittle others.

Ask to make an appointment to speak about becoming a Catholic (or as somebody else mentioned RCIA). If asked about your personal life, say something to the effect," I would rather discuss personal issues face to face instead of over the phone." Again, as already mentioned, the deacon may have been rephrasing in order to show that he was listening rather than intentionally trying to interrupt. He may indeed have been trying to fill out a form. What you cannot see is the body language that is so much a part of conversation, just like on these posts where sometimes disagreements unnecessarily erupt because of the limitations of the written word. Growing up, telephone calls were generally never more than 5 minutes, except those that were long distance. It was basically, “Hi, may I come over?” or “Can we meet (at such and such place) to talk?.” This was mostly to preserve privacy. With the advances in technology, we no longer worry so much about somebody listening to our conversations and the amount of information we give out over the phone is much greater than it was in the past. Still, there is something to be said about meeting face-to-face. Hope this helps.
