I was married in to a non Catholic. My parents would not let me get married unless we got married “in the church”. The priest who married us was a “friend of the family” of the groom. I do not recall either of us having to go through any marriage classes or the male having to go through any classes regarding the Catholic faith. We never attended any Catholic church after we were married. This marriage lasted 1 year. I have been “out of the church” ever since, mostly due to the confusion surrounding this marriage/divorce.
I refuse to consider asking the church for an annulment because 1) I do not believe this was a valid marriage to begin with and believe the priest basically performed an “illegal” function by marrying us, and 2) I do not wish, nor do I know how to contact my ex, who could be dead for all I know. we were 18-19 year old kids at the time. The age of consent for marriage was 21 and our parents had to sign permissions for us to be married. Does anyone know what the church rules were back then regarding a Catholic marrying a non Catholic?
I have gone on with my life and have now been married for 25 years to a wonderful man. He is not Catholic and we were not married in the church.
I have always felt “ripped off” by the actions surrounding my first marriage (sham). I have not felt “accepted” in Catholic church, mostly from my father telling me I’m not accepted there.
I do not feel obligated or comfortable to ask the church for an annulment of a marriage the priest should not have performed to begin with and that was probably performed against church rules and therefore was invalid and therefore, not considered a marriage by the church to begin with…
what is your take on this?
