You know if everyone were to keep sex within marriage only there wouldn’t be any STDs.

What is that purpose?

If nobody had ever sinned, and Satan hadn’t reblled, what would be the purpose of Hell?

This is true, but in non religious schools these moral clauses are secular. Preaching the morality of abstinence without God is a fruitless endeavor. You could say it is safer to not have sex, but in terms of morality, when you remove God from the equation, there is nothing morally wrong with having sex while not married. Lying or deceiving someone to have sex is morally wrong but if both parties are on the same page and know what they are getting into it is not morally wrong to have premarital sex if you take God out of the equation.

I subjectively committed a sin by having sex outside marriage. If morals were objective everyone would agree on them or there would be some way to prove the right moral system…unfortunately there is no way to prove the validity of a moral system. You believe that my son is proof of God’s ability to bring beauty out of all things but I believe that my son is a product of pure biology without the necessity of a higher being. Unfortunately neither one of us can prove our claims so we are left at a crossroads where we will likely never agree.

And if no one sinned hell would not exist. What is your point?
My point is that STDs are always the excuse for using condoms. “Use a condom, don’t get an STD! Practice SAFE sex!” etc, etc. However, the logic used in this argument is self defeating. By facilitating the causative force behind the transmission of STDs(sex outside of marriage) condoms actually cause the spread of STDs and cause people to become infected who otherwise would not have. That’s my point. The policy which would actually eliminate STDs and would be in reality “SAFE sex” is sex within marriage only.

So the proponents of condoms on campus are actually supporting the opposite of what they say they are. They are promoting STDs, out of wedlock pregnancy, and by virtue of the effects of premarital sex, divorce, broken families, and crime. How wonderful!

The only problem is that kids are going to have sex…so they might as well use a condom while doing it.

I reject the hypothesis that there is only one true morality, and that the one true morality is defined by a higher power. In that regard, I believe in a “common morality” or “universal morality” based upon the community’s majority stance on issues.

As a nonreligious person I see no moral obligation to abstain until marriage. As such, I feel that a University/College that submits a set of moral obligations for its students to follow must adhere to the ethos of ALL people who might attend that school, not just one sect. However, in the end it is the to the discretion of the University to establish boundaries; but to instill an ethical mandate upon young adults must be done appropriately and with an open mind.

Regarding the main point of the poster’s query, as I agree with the rebutting statement about needing to at least mention abstinence. Upon further reflection I see no harm, and indeed only good, by initiating the ‘Sex’ section in the Handbook with a brief statement that true abstinence is the only 100% method of protecting ones self from disease. They should also mention that regular testing for those who do commit sexual activity is just as important for protecting others.

Teenagers are going to die, might as well happen today. hahahaha

Anyway, the idea that some people will conduct themselves immorally ergo the moral position should be abandoned is ridiculous.

People are going to die in car wrecks, might as well not put in seat belts.

Seat belts are like condoms. You could still die while wearing seat belts but you are a lot less likely to do so. But the best way to avoid dieing in a car accident is to not drive.

Anyway, pre marital sex is immoral in your opinion but that isn’t true in everyone’s opinion. I don’t think that pre marital sex is immoral. It seems stupid to think that having sex on friday is immoral but having sex on saturday night after you had some sort of ceremony is a beautiful and wonderful thing. Do you see the disconnect? Lying to someone about your intentions to lure them into having sex with them is certainly immoral. Having a one night stand with someone while both parties know that is all it is going to be is not immoral IMO. It might not be smart or safe, but it isn’t immoral.

What the Handbook does NOT cover is the MORAL opinion on the subject. Morality is to the discretion of the individual, not the university.
Very true, but, doesn’t it seem that by the very fact they have the section in the book that they support it or consider it ‘moral’ to some degree?

To Equites Christi,

I do not think that the University is promoting sex by including a “safe sex” section in their Handbook. I feel they are being responsible by promoting the use of devices that reduces their risk of contracting a life-altering disease. Although abstinence would negate the need for such devices, not everyone will confine themselves to that difficult sacrifice.
