i am having a meeting soon with the vocations director and i am wondering what i should do to prepare.

Kevstar31,

First I would like to congratulate you on at least checking into a possible religous vocation. The first step can be a hard one to make. I just started my seminary studies for the diocesan priesthood this year.

My first piece of advice would be to pray that the DoV (director of vocations) and yourself will be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Be honest with yourself about what you think God may be calling you too. Pray that the Holy Spirit will give you what you need to discern your call, no matter what it is.

You also need to be open and honest with your DoV. He is there to help you discern your call. Somrthing that they told us here at the seminary is that we should not be ashamed if we do not make it here. We need to accept that God may not be calling us to the priesthood. (I am assuming you are discerning the priesthood).

Just to reiterate: Pray that you and your DoV will be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Be honest with your DoV, he is there to help.

Hope that helps, and I hope that I did not overwhelm you.

God Bless you in your disernment.🙂

put it in the hands of the Spirit and BE HONEST! Also, don’t get too worked up…the ones I have met are very nice and understanding. 👍 👍

Try not to be too nervous, be honest, and be open to the Holy Spirit. It is not much more difficult than that. I remember when I first my vocation director. It was a great experience. A bit of advice, you might want to write down all the questions you want to ask him. When he asked me if I had any questions, I was nervous and forget all of them.

Most importantly, pray about it. I recommend making a holy hour before the Sacrament for the intention of a good meeting with the vocations director. Remember this isn’t a competition or something you have to pass an entrance exam to get into or anything. This is a vocation. The vocation director’s job, as with your spiritual director (if you don’t have one, get one), is to help you discern your vocation. Be honest about everything he asks you, be as open as you should be (keep in mind you’re not in confession). Don’t be embarrased or afraid- remember he’s there to help you.

You’ve received all the good, standard advice – get a spiritual director, pray, trust in your vocations director, be open to the Holy Spirit, etc.

Here are some things to keep in mind if all of that does not work as advertised:

Spiritual direction is wonderful, provided you can find an well trained, experienced director who believes what the Church teaches. If you cannot, then St. Teresa of Avila says you are better off going without a director at all.

Your diocesan vocations director, the diocesan admissions committee, and your bishop are all people, just like you. They are not blessed with infallibility. Nor are they immune to the influences of the evil one. Sometimes they make good decisions, sometimes they don’t. If the decision they reach does not agree with what you know in your heart to be true, then simply look elsewhere.

Remember, many of the saints had trouble getting into and/or finishing the seminary, and many others had trouble finding the right place within the Church, i.e., which order to join and the like.
