I’m going to be attending Mass tomorrow, but I’m not an officially confirmed Catholic. So I know that I can’t take Commuion, but what do I do instead? Should I just stand off in the back, or what would proper thing to do be?

You can sit in the pew while people go up for Communion or you can go up and get a blessing.

Aequitas,
If you are comfortable with following along with the mass, sit anywhere. If you feel awkward about it you can sit in a pew in the back. If you want to say the responses you can, if you don’t feel comfortable just listen. When time for communion comes along you can go up to receive a blessing if this is a practice in the diocese. Some dioceses don’t do this so if you go up the priest may try to give you communion. Do not receive communion even if offered by mistake. Since you are not yet in communion with the Catholic Church through confirmation, you shouldn’t receive the sacrament which is an example of communion.

God Bless,

Say that I go up there to recieve a blessing, what do I do? Should I say something, or how would he know to give a blessing instead of Communion?

In my diocese you approach the priest with your arms folded over your chest making a X. You could ask the priest before mass if he offers a blessing for those unable to receive communion.

The most used practice to show you want a blessing instead of communion is to cross your arms over your chest.

You are supposed to cross your arms (one hand on each opposite shoulder for a blessing), but it is only the priest who should be doing this in the communion lines. So you’d need to sit in the pews headed for the right line…It would probably be easiest to sit on one end of a pew at least mid-way back and stand aside to allow the communicants to pass, then sit back down or kneel while they are in line and receiving communion. The priest can bless you after Mass too, if you ask him. Or you can pray in front of the tabernacle before or after Mass and get your graces that way (which is a nice thing to do if you’re discerning becoming Catholic).
