So a few years ago I had an iPod touch and the screen broke. I replaced the screen but it didn’t work properly, so I took it back and they replaced it with a new one. My mum is now in possession of it. I feel bad that I basically ripped them off. Should I do anything? I don’t know if there’s a whole lot I can do anyway. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Can you please explain why you feel you ripped them off?

You took it back, but they didn’t keep it? If it works well enough for your mom, but truly didn’t work well enough or correctly for you, then I don’t see any culpability on your part.

Many times Apple will simply transfer your songs and replace your damaged unit with a new or refurbished unit. This is more cost effective for them than trying to repair the unit you have in their store. As long as you did not lie (“What, kangaroo damage? Nope, no kangaroo ever stepped on my iPod”) then how they chose to repair your unit is up to them.

If your conscience is bothering you at this point, may I humbly suggest a donation to a good Catholic Charity or a random act of kindness toward someone less fortunate?

My take:
  1. OP breaks iPod screen.
  2. OP replaces screen on his own, product doesn’t work.
  3. OP returns product as defective but doesn’t explain that he’d broken and then tried to fix it.
  4. OP is so tormented by his dishonesty that he posts about it years later.
If it’s causing this much discomfort, my suggestion would be to buy another one, resell it, and give the proceeds to charity.

I was only 15 or 16 at the time. Obviously at the time I didn’t see it as wrong.

I might try explaining it again for those that don’t understand.

I had an iPod. Screen broke. I replaced screen. Still didn’t work properly. Took it back and got a replacement iPod when I shouldn’t have.

I would hardly see this as a customer service issue. I was dishonest.

I’ll try explaining it another way…

You steal something worth $200 or so that isn’t yours. You give it to someone as a present. You don’t know that you’ve done something wrong. What can you do now to make amends?

I hardly have enough money to buy a new one… I’m 18 and not working.

Confess it to your priest - give the exact details. Seek genuine forgiveness and follow the act of contrition you’re given by the priest.

I smell scruples…

Confess this and never dwell on it again.

Explain it to us that still don’t understand. How were you dishonest? Did you break it yourself? Did you lie about it not working properly? Did they take it from you and you snuck it back into your schoolbag? Explain how it’s all about you and not about the person who gave you the new unit.

You seem pretty sure you have all these answers and are arguing with us when you haven’t given anyone at all any reason to think you did anything wrong. Let me tell you something from several of your lifetimes of experience: you will sometimes be treated with gross unfairness in life and you will sometimes receive unearned benefits.

Go to reconciliation, as someone advised, since you have your mind made up and nothing anyone took the time or trouble to say to you here, seems to make a dent. I suggest you go to the priest first in future with these issues and save time. Have a lovely day.

I know what I did was wrong. I’m not trying to ask if it was wrong, I’m trying to ask what I should do about it. Some posters understand the situation. I’ve tried explaining it the best I can.

I can’t put it more simple. Basically I shouldn’t have got a replacement for the iPod because once you open the iPod up, the warranty is void.

I was dishonest and deceitful. I should not have taken it back and received a refund/replacement for a product that no longer had a warranty.

Hopefully that sheds a little light on things. If it doesn’t, there’s nothing I can do.

Electronic companies due this mainly to stop folks from opening the iPod and trying to hack the software or tweak the hardware, frying the iPod and then getting a new one. This is not as iron-clad as you think.

The Apple folks can tell when you open the unit and I am sure they looked and if they gave you a new unit they did so knowing you opened it and did so anyway. Many companies do these “out of warranty” repairs as good customer service.

Let it go and if your conscience still bothers you take it to confession.

I agree with this. And don’t forget that they are Apple “Geniuses” who deal with you in store, so you can presume they knew you had opened it.

If you are worried, talk to a priest. But when you bring this to confession, you must be prepared to let go of it afterwards. Dwelling on sin is to doubt the forgiveness of God.
