Hi, in a little over two weeks, I’m going to be flying out for the first time to see this girl I’ve been talking to for about 5 weeks or so, and I’m just wondering what I should get for her. Flowers? Chocolate? Any ideas would be welcome. Also, I might be meeting her sister/brother-in-law. What should I get them? Thanks in advance!

Maybe you could could something faith-related, so you can show her you want to start out your relationship centered on Christ and His Church. How about a something immaterial like a spiritual bouquet to show her you have been praying for her and a Catholic book that you guys could read together after your trip (you could talk about it during your phone conversations). A beautiful bouquet of flowers to hand her once you meet is a great gesture too!

I think flowers would be lovely, but I’m a terrific romantic. :o

For her family, perhaps something food like that is very specific to where you are from. For example, I’m from Michigan so I would probably take someone some Michigan cherries or maybe some Vernors soda if I were driving to see them. It’s not anything extravagant, but still personal and thoughtful.

Good luck with the meeting! I will never forget flying to England by myself to meet my soon-to-be husband for the first time in person, after 8 months online!! 😃

Well what kind of music does she like? Maybe a cd of her favorite band or music group? Is she a gamer? Maybe a video game? Does she like reading a lot of Catholic books or any book for that matter? Maybe you can bring her that…Something that means a lot to her you know? That sparks her interest. I know that my dbf would connect via video games with me and it was fun having someone to share that with…Or would surprise me in the park when I was with my kids, something that sparked my interest…Chocolates and flowers are great, believe me I love them both but the things I remember the most is how he knew what I liked and would make it his mission to make sure I had those things…So good luck and God bless! Hope things go well for you!

*I think it’s so sweet of you to think of buying her sister and BIL something, but personally, I think it’s too premature for that. I think buying her flowers would be perfect. But, not her family just yet. Maybe take them to lunch and offer to pay–that would be a nice gesture of kindness. My dh didn’t buy my sister or family anything until we knew where the relationship was heading, but he did pay for dinner a few times, when we visited. I personally think that would be better, but that’s just me. :o

Just my two cents. *

Thank you for your responses so far. They’re very much appreciated.

That’s a very interesting idea. Perhaps a book. She likes Father Corapi a lot, but I think she already has most of his DVD’s, so it may be hard to find something that she doesn’t already have. I wouldn’t give her any religious jewelry yet, because even if it’s religious, it may be a bit premature. I think I will go with the flowers. Time to check out florists in her area!

Haha, she’s actually from Michigan, and she doesn’t like cherries! But I like the idea of getting her something specific to my area.

I think she likes Christian/country/rock music. She doesn’t play video games though, as she doesn’t own a computer, which is probably one of the reasons why it went from emails to calling so fast (after a week or two). I like the book idea, though, and I can even sign the book!

OK, I think you’re right. If we go out to eat with them, I will definitely offer to pay.

*I know that your heart’s in the right place, SCG, but paying for lunch or dinner will be classy, and not too forward at this stage. Gifts are great gestures, but when you don’t know someone all too well, buying a gift for her family members, it might come across as too forward, desperate for them to accept you, kind of thing. I mean, you don’t even know if you’ll end up seeing her again, if she’ll like you/you like her, etc…if it’s meant to be, and things go well, you’ll have years to buy them gifts :D, when it’s more appropriate.

Offer to pay for lunch or dinner–it’s classy, and not presumptious. Good luck on your trip!! God bless. :)*

Such a wise gal! I agree.
Have fun!

OK, I asked her last night what her favorite flower is, and she said roses. I’m taking that as a hint. But when I asked her what color roses she liked the best, she said that I need to do some of the work! Women, gotta love 'em.

when my future hubby came to visit me for the first time after we had talked for 4 months he didn’t bring me anything and I didn’t expect him to, to be quite honest. I mean, I haven’t even met the guy yet and I wasn’t expecting presents yet. He did pay for dinner, which was what I was expecting him to do.

If you are gonna buy her something, make it simple. If she likes roses, maybe get her a single rose with something small with it. Don’t over-do it at this time, you haven’t met her yet in person and I agree with whatevergirl that it seems a little premature.

Now, as my hubby and i got to know each other, he would from time to time get me something and bring it with him. He never bought my family anything and that was fine too, they didn’t expect anything from him except for him to be good to me. 😛

Good luck on your first date with this lady and I hope you guys hit it off, so to speak. The first time I met with DH we were so nervous, I laugh in retrospect, but as time went on we relaxed and things just flowed between us.

LOL!! Good for her!! 👍

Choose the color of roses that reminds you of her, and if she asks you why you chose that color, then you can tell her why. 😉

Yea, her favorite color is blue, though I don’t know if God makes blue roses.

How about a book… on some topic that you shared that you are both very interested in… Anyway, its hard to give advice when we dont know you nor the woman. 🙂

Get the roses. My BIL got flowers for my sister all the time(and still does). The gesture behind it cannot be beat. After a couple months she introduced us to him and he brought all the women flowers. Spring bouquets for us. White roses for her.

White = Purity and innocence.

Yellow = Friendship and or health.

Red = Passion, Romance, Blood (I think more appropriate for after marriage since the symbolism fits better) pure velvettey maroon perfect red, keep that in mind for the long run. 😉

Maybe there is a reason for no blue roses:

Purple and Royal Blue = Royalty (which is why these colors in roses are genetically made and not natural) lol

Green = luck except the darker greens which indicate a member of the 7 deadly sins (you know which)

I am only playing devil’s advocate, I am trying to never be negative on this site anymore.

Now these among other colors are things I have come to learn growing up in our faith ( I still remember since parochial school). I do not bat an eye sometimes, but if I received flowers from a gentleman I liked, I might take some symbolism into consideration.

We dress the altar in certain colors such as white, green, and purple. We have always thrived on symbolism. You can have fun with this. SCG, you’re not perfect, she is not either, there is no perfect suggestion, we all have opinion here. It is yours that counts and it is her interpretation that will count to you. You have to be you.

Good Luck in Michigan! We are all rooting for you! GBY!

So if I wanted to give her a bouquet of roses that would signify a budding romance, what color would I pick? Pink? Red? Mixed?

I agree with many people here, get her flowers. Anything else would probably be a little too much too soon.

I’m wondering if roses might not be the best flowers to get for the first time you meet her. They are “romantic” so maybe you should stick with just pretty flowers. Save roses for a little later, especially red roses!

I hope your meeting goes great! 😃

My daughter’s husband sent her white roses the day after their first date. She was so impressed. He turned out to be a real 'keeper".
