I am looking for a few good recommendations on what books I should be reading to strengthen my faith. Anyone have a good book that they enjoyed that was interesting/helped them in the Church?

Thanks!

Becca

Haydock’s Commentary and the Fathers.

I tend to find such material interesting. I’m not sure if it’s what you’re looking for, Bible and commentary and writings of the Saints, or whether you’re looking for more modern stuff.

Karl Keating’s great informational book: ***Catholicism and Fundamentalism *** Can be found here.

Keating’s book although “informational” is extremely readable–a very enjoyable read in fact. Looking for more of a story format?

David Currie’s fine book: ***Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic ***
Can be found here.

And Scott and Kimberly Hahn’s excellent book: Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism
Can be found here.

If you haven’t yet read these, I would suggest (all of) them.

This was also a recommendation for me to read as well and By What Authority? an Evangelical Discovers Catholic Tradition by Mark Shea.

One has arrived, but I am still waiting for Mark Shea’s book.

Karl Keating also wrote a book titles *What Catholics Really Believe, Setting the Record Straight *which is good.

Conversion stories are less technical,so to speak, but they are usually informative and uplifting. I liked Patrick Madrid’s “Surprised by Truth” books.

If you’re after learning what the Church teaches, there’s nothing better than the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

For daily reading and meditation, I absolutely loved **“In Conversation With God” ** based on the Mass readings for the day. They are EXCELLENT. Includes exegesis of the Scripture passages, quotes from saints, how to apply in our lives, … If it’s too pricey to buy the whole set (7 books) all at once, they can be purchased separately. The books are small in size (4" x 6") - prayerbook size.

**A Biblical Walk Through The Mass **by Edward Sri.

The book explores the Biblical roots of the things we say and do during Mass. Understanding these things helps us to more fully experience the Liturgy.

**The Fathers Know Best **by Jimmy Akin.

The writings of the Church Fathers. The early Church was indeed the Catholic Church. The evidence is right there in black and white.

Some books that stick out in my mind (aside from the Bible and Catechism which are at the top of my list)

Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist by Brant Pitre

Four Witnesses by Rod Bennett

The Lamb’s Supper by Scott Hahn

7 Secrets of Confession by Vinnie Flynn (I think all Catholics should read this one)

The Confessions by St. Augustine (not an easy read but very good)

My hidden treasure is “Why The Cross?” by Father Edward Leen. He was a Redemptorist priest and wrote this book at the start of World War 2. It’s about suffering, pain, and happiness. I have a huge thirst for spiritual reading but this is the book I come back to time after time. It is a slow read and difficult- much to ponder-but so worth the effort! Has anyone else read this?
I also really liked “The End of the Present World and the Mysteries of the Future Life” by Father Arminjon. This is the book that St. Therese loved.
“Rediscover Catholicism” is a good book for appreciating the gift and the beauty of the Catholic Faith.

Thank you all!

I am open to all suggestions. I realized the other day that other than night prayers and usually a daily rosary, I don’t ponder or read enough about my faith. I want spiritual reading to be a habit, not a chore.

In the area of strengthening faith, “Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light” is a great read about moving forward in trust despite great spiritual difficulties.

Other than the Bible, Haydocks commentary, Church Fathers, and the Imitation of Christ, I would say:

“Heliotropium; Conformity of the Human Will to the Divine” By Fr. Jeremias Drexlius. This can be read for free here: catholictradition.org/Classics/heliotropium.htm

The other recommendation I would give would be to read anything and everything by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. 👍

I would suggest you start reading through the entire New Testament, starting with the Book of John, then circling back through the other 3 gospels after reaching the end of Revelation.

After that, read Psalms and Proverbs in the Old Testament.

Matthew Kelly “4 Signs of a Dynamic Catholic”

And like others have said, a chapter of scripture every morning is mandatory (for me anyway)
