When St. Francis went away a while, his confrers lightened up the strict rule and we know what happened then. Why did we think anything would be different when discipline was relaxed starting with the mid 60s? It didn’t. You had the ones who were lax and living loosely and you had spirituals, some of whom went wrong in a conservative kind of way and probably many just left. I think the reins need to be pulled in more. Holy Days of obligation moved to Thursday need to be brought back to Thursday, for one thing. The weak need to be going to Masses more often; not less, just because it might be inconvenient and many might not feel they need to go. I think the cuddly Church has lost the respect of the mainstream Catholics. I have a relative who thinks the Mass is not necessary to attend under normal circumstances.
Now, harder things to hear are being said, but it could be a while before the average Catholic is listening or cares. I think many Boomers, the ones raising the kids the last pope was trying to focus on, live according to their own conscience and raise their kids accordingly on purpose or not. I don’t know of anyone in my Catholic schools who went to a world youth day, much less knew of any writings he wrote. The Mass is still played with (clapping for the new altar server or the musicians, for ex. before Mass is ended). Parents allow kids to dress in play clothes in areas not in poor areas (though, in the old days, I understand, for poor people, a respectable outfit was the first thing bought for kids to wear and were passed down). We need to straighten this stuff out. Radical clergy need to go the way of Lefebvre in being decommissioned. Those who innovate in the Mass need to be warned first, of course.
I think the lightening up of the Church saw the same effects of what happened in St. Francis’s order. Like in St. Francis’s order, things got better in some areas, usually where people kept close to the original rule. Likewise, where discipline was lightened, laxity prevailed. That’s in communities; we in the mainstream are even more in peril. We were not, nor will we ever, be enlightened as a collective for a lightening up of disciplines, art, architecture in the mainstream. What did our leaders think would happen when they lightened things up more and more since V2 when history shows it causes a breakdown in morals in a religious community? It’s time to turn back the clock on many things, including the turning 180 degrees of the priest where he faces the people, thus taking out the temptation to be an MC. Common sense and the psychology of the masses need to be reintroduced.
The Catholic Church, despite its problems, still is the One , Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and the one necessary for salvation for those who are not invincibly ignorant, but which allows for the salvation of them because otherwise they wouldn’t be saved. I believe I stated it correctly after the second “church”.
