What should we do now at the final blessing by a priest?

Dear rev,

we are used to making the sign of the cross, when the priest gives the final blessing. But now one of the priests says that whilst he gives the final blessing, the congregation should only join their hands and receive the blessing, and that we should not make the sign of the cross. We are confused. Please tell us what is right. Thank you.

Dear friend,

That is his hangup. It is not the custom of the Church to refrain from making the sign of the cross when receiving a priest’s blessing. I encourage you to continue making the sign of the cross at such times–with the rest of the Church!
