What should young kids do on Ash Wednesday?

My family will be going to an Ash Wednesday service tonight and I was wondering whether my two young kids should get ashes. My kids are 6 and 4.

Since the meaning of this is repentance, and they are both under the age of reason, should they participate?

Yes, unless there is some reason they can’t. There is no reason why they can’t do as all the other family members do. Now I believe that you should not give shellfish to young children, but they can eat vegetables, fruit, rice, pasta, etc. which is all good for them too!
 
We already went this morning and my kids 7, 5, 4 and 2 all received ashes.
