How can God even forgive someone who never even wants to realize that he/she has sinned?

Yes!

A ton of the work of a Christian I’ve realized lately is simply realizing what your sins are… you can go by years as a Catholic, living in objective sins simply because you dismiss certain things as not sinful, or at least not important enough to need overcoming. And these things can be doing terrible damage without you realizing it… putting your salvation in great danger.

Simply because you’re not attentive towards reforming your life and searching out what needs to be gotten rid of so you live for God purely.

Conversion is a real thing, with real work!

And If Catholic Holy Communion can [and does] remit lesser veniel sins, and Eucarist IS the Real Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our God [the forgiver of sins?] then why are Mortal sins NOT fogiven along with the lesser sins?

Yes I have hard that one cannot receive Communion with unconfessed Mortal sin; but that’s NOT TRUE. One CAN, but should not?

So why can’t God forgive Mortal sins through Catholic Holy Communion?

ALL sins CAN be forgiven.

1. How?

Because God is infinite, his sacrifice atoned for an infinite number of sins, no matter how grave they may be. However, we cannot be forgiven of those sins for which we do not repent of (sincerely, I might add). When Jesus said to the apostles: “If you forgive the sins of men they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of men they are retained” (John 20:23). Similarly, the following verses reinforce the apostles/priests’ ability to forgive sins: Matthew 16:19 and Matthew 18:18.

1. What sins are NOT forgiven?

Those sins which are not repented of. Essentially, the unforgivable sin is a FINAL denial of God’s love and mercy (which brings about REPENTANCE) offered by the Holy Spirit. The sin is unforgivable insofar as it demonstrates a hardness of heart, which prevents one from being forgiven. Remember, there is always hope to be forgiven! Cf. The Prodigal Son, The Divine Mercy etc.

Thomas Aquinas listed several sins as unforgivable. I will list a few, but first I will clarify that these sins are only unforgivable in themselves, meaning that, they can still be repented of. BUT, if we die in such a state of sin, God cannot forgive us as we are in some way rejecting that forgiveness. Here are some examples:

Presumption: Assuming that we can sin freely because God will forgive us.
Despair: A hardness of heart which leads one to lose ALL hope in God’s mercy. Scupulous individuals should not worry that they have despaired as they most likely haven’t (despair does not include repentance and it is different to uncertainty about God’s mercy etc.), and IF they have, they can repent.
Obstinacy in Sin: Willful persistence in sin, despite knowledge of its gravity.

Fulton Sheen put it nicely. The sin against the Holy Spirit is committed by the individual who rationalises their own sins. Such a person does not repent, at least, not to the extent that God requires.

Yes. That is Church teaching. However, only venial sins are forgiven at Communion and we should not receive the Eucharist if we are conscious of mortal sin. Otherwise we would be adding another mortal sin to the equation.

I think that the word “repent” is synonymous with “confess”. I’m sure the person who you are quoting understands the NORMATIVE necessity of the sacrament of confession for the forgiveness of mortal sin- the exception being when an individual has perfect contrition and/or is unable to recieve the sacrament. I don’t think that they were denying the necessity of confession. Also, remember that Jesus himself used the words: “Repent…for the kingdom of God is at hand.”

The moment one believes in the Lord Jesus Christ all of his sins are forgiven. Colossians 2:13. All believers are “complete” in HIM! Colossians 2:10. Nothing can be added to this completeness.

I’m 68 years old and a cradle-catholic. I’m well aware of the seven sacraments and the rest of the teachings of the Catholic Church but here we are discussing the forgiveness of sins and not the other sacraments. When I quoted John I obviously meant being truly sorry for offending God, promising not to do it again and confessing our sin to a priest.

You are right. I wasn’t arguing against the necessity of repentance WITH confession. I was just clarifying what I understood the previous poster to be saying, which is that, repenting (in the sacrament of confession) is sufficient for forgiveness. And yes, I understand the other conditions for forgiveness such as ‘sorrow’ etc.

I commonly hear Catholics speaking of repentance in a way that implies sacramental confession, but your clarity is appreciated.
