The idea of Vixen being an all girl band was started by Jan Kuehnemund back in high school in 1973. By 1988, and after several lineup changes over the years, she had recruited three members who would become part of their debut album “Vixen” after signing a major label deal with EMI records.
After finishing their tour, they returned to the studio and released a second album “Rev It Up” in July 1990. They began touring again, but just a year later in 1991, split up due to musical differences.
In 1997, drummer Roxy Petrucci & singer/guitarist Janet Gardner tried to reform Vixen with two new members. They released a new album “Tangerine” under the Vixen moniker, but in 1998 were sued by Jan Kuehnemund for copyright infringement.
In 2001, Jan Kuehnemund officially reformed Vixen with Petrucci, Gardner & a new bassist Pat Holloway. Halfway through the tour, disagreements caused the band to split again leaving Kuehnemund alone to scramble for three new replacements to finish the tour.
In 2004, VH1 went in search of the four original Vixen members for their show “Bands Reunited” to bring them all together for a one time special concert performance.

In 2006, Kuehnemund and her replacements from 2001 went on to release a live album “Extended Versions”, and a studio album “Live & Learn” as Vixen.
At the end of 2012, Jan Kuehnemund was planning to reunite the original Vixen lineup with Janet Gardner, Share Pedersen, and Roxy Petrucci. But in January 2013, before the official announcement of their reunion, Kuehnemund was diagnosed with cancer, and after a 9 month battle, she died on Oct. 10, 2013.
In December 2013, the three remaining members decided to continue on under the name Vixen in honor of Jan Kuehnemund…
Most of this information is a nutshell version found at their wiki page and official website. To my surprise, they are still together to this day. They just recently played at the M3 rock festival in Maryland less than 2 weeks ago. I owned both their early albums and used to listen to them quite a bit in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I had no idea all this went on over the years. I thought they just faded away during the 90’s grunge era.
