What sort of Resurrection was Lazarus?

One interpretation of scripture speaks of a plot amongst the leaders at the time to kill Lazarus after his resurrection because he was indisputable evidence of the divinity of Jesus. It would almost certainly have been a bodily resurrection.

Tradition says he was in Sheol/ Hades and when he came back to life he spent the rest of his life very worried, because he had seen souls there who were not in the Limbo of the Fathers waiting for Jesus to open Heaven, but rather were in the part of Sheol reserved for the damned.

That’s not an “interpretation of Scripture”, it’s pretty much what Scripture says.

John 12:9-11
[The] large crowd of the Jews found out that he was there and came, not only because of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. And the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus too, because many of the Jews were turning away and believing in Jesus because of him.

There are versions of scripture that aren’t so explicit, leading the reader to think “they were plotting to kill him” refers to Jesus (which makes sense). I had not seen your version above. Thanks!

IMO Jesus was the first one to have a glorified body, to show us what awaits us after the final judgement. What happened to Enoch and Elijah’s bodies we don’t really know, but Jesus having a glorified body we know for certain. Lazarus came back to life with a normal body and went on to age and die. Otherwise the early Church fathers would have told us.
 
Man, that family sounds like your typical bickering sibling family. First we get Martha bickering at Mary to come help with dinner instead of sitting at Jesus’ feet, and then Lazarus being grumpy because Jesus raised him from the dead just because his sisters were sad.

Except he wasn’t in the presence of the Lord. Not that the Bosom of Abraham was a bad place, Jewish tradition likens it to Eden, but there is no beatific vision there.
 
Pope Benedict actually addresses this question in one of his Jesus trilogy books. I can’t remember which one it was. He is of the opinion that Lazarus’ resurrection was not a glorified resurrection like the resurrected Jesus and that Lazarus would go on to die a natural death. I want to say he referred to it as a temporary resurrection. It’s been a while since I read it though so I could be misremembering it.
 
It’s primarily an Eastern Orthodox tradition, but obviously pre-schism. Some sources are in the Wiki article on Lazarus here


Western Church traditions about Lazarus are more confused because there was another later Lazarus associated with Marseilles and some of his legend has gotten mixed up with the biblical Lazarus.

We do know some of this information. A glorified body will possess:.
Impassibility, subtlety, agility, and clarity.
