What (specifically) are mortal sins?

Depends if the Commandments are meant to be taken at face value or not. If so, then assault is not killing.
I don’t know the answer. The problem is that there is not an actual Church approved list of things which are definitely mortal sins other than what each of the 10 Commandments state so its often difficult to decide if something is mortal or venial.
The following are mortal sins because they mean automatic excommunication.

Canon 1364: apostasty, heresy, or schism
Canon 1367: violation of the Scared Species
Canon 1370: laying violent hands on the Pope
Canon 1378: absolution of an accomplice
Canon 1382: episcopal consecration without without authorisation from the Holy See
Canon 1388: violation of the seal of confession by a confessor
Canon 1398: procuring abortion

Not all of these are Commandments.
 
**1853 **Sins can be distinguished according to their objects, as can every human act; or according to the virtues they oppose, by excess or defect; or according to the commandments they violate. They can also be classed according to whether they concern God, neighbor, or oneself; they can be divided into spiritual and carnal sins, or again as sins in thought, word, deed, or omission. The root of sin is in the heart of man, in his free will, according to the teaching of the Lord: “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a man.” But in the heart also resides charity, the source of the good and pure works, which sin wounds.

1858 Grave matter is specified by the Ten Commandments, corresponding to the answer of Jesus to the rich young man: "Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and your mother."132 The gravity of sins is more or less great: murder is graver than theft. One must also take into account who is wronged: violence against parents is in itself graver than violence against a stranger.

This touched my heart deeply. May I tell you a personal story?

I had a very abusive earthly father. 😦 By the time I became a believer in the risen Christ, I am ashamed to say it, but I hated him. :mad:

As I grew in the Lord, however, He began to change my heart. After only a short time, I realized it was a sin to hate, and I asked God to change me. First, I had to pray, “Lord, please help me to want to pray for my dad.” Sounds pathetic, huh? That’s where I was, though. 😦 Well, before long, God helped me to be able to begin sincerely praying for my dad. As I continued in prayer, and as I grew in my faith in Jesus, God continued to change my heart-- and I began to see the good in my dad, and even to be thankful for him.

Much later, by the grace of God, I grew to actually love my dad, and to forgive him completely. Mind you, none of this had anything to do with me, but it had everything to do with Jesus! He IS able to transform the hardest heart into a heart aflame with His love! :love:

Now, do you think I could possibly feel it is “sinful” for me to be thankful that God freed me from these sins of unforgiveness and hatred?!? No way! *I PRAISE GOD * that He delivered me from this bondage, and restored my relationship with my earthly father! God is AWESOME!!! Only HE could do such a thing!!!

By the way, only a couple weeks before he died, my dad actually apologized to me. Well, because, thanks to JESUS, I had already forgiven him in my heart long ago, I was able to joyfully receive his apology. :bounce: He died knowing that I loved him and was praying for him-- and I still pray for him! :angel1:

Like my boys sing in Sunday school at their Dad’s church:

“God is so good, God is so good, God is so good,
He’s so good to me!
God answers prayer, God answers prayer, God answers prayer,
He’s so good to me!” :dancing:

Give glory to God, and praise His holy name!!! :bowdown2:

Never be ashamed of His deliverance! Tell others what He did for you, and give the glory to HIM!

This is a nice link…actually, i was surprised it was easy to read. So much you write is “over my head” and i loose the insight. I do follow, still hopeing though.

Good link. I wonder though. In the list of mortal sins under commandment #2= it is a mortal sin to take an oath in a seceret society. Would not this apply to the Knights of Colombus? I am a Knight (1st degree) and have had an uneasy feeling with the fraternity since shortly after joining. So much so that to this day I refuse to go to the 2nd and 3rd degree intitiation. I have heard some “unselttling” things about the 2nd and 3rd degree inititiations, however, no will tell me since it is a “seceret.” Can someone help me out with these inquries?
 
Also, doesn’t “force of habit” diminish the gravity of a mortal sin. Therfore, if the force of habit is sufficient, the mortal sin could be counted as nothing more than venial? I beleive I remember seeing this in the CCC.

Dear St. Eric,

There is a thread not to old on this matter, and another person not wanting to join has asked others about it. I did feel in my opinion, that he did hear others out, but was willing to take a firm side on what others said, before the church, and we were not able to make any difference. He believed that he would be breaking his honesty vows to his wife if he did not disclose the ritual/secret.

I on the other hand had learned so very much from the thread, and although a woman, heard some very strong evidence in the Knights support. I sugest reading the thread, and you will find actual members of the KoC. You will also find a lot of truth shared that we did not expect.

There is sufficient support in the proper forms of conduct to support even my perspective. As for it being secret, there in it lies a few reasons i came away with. If you were asked, or suprised with something you needed to react to at the exact moment…maybe to facilitate an honest reply, i can see the need to not disclose it to anyone, as the integrity of honest reply is lost. The other thing is simply this. Try and read up on the different forms and practices of the Catholic. The one who brags is not justly doing this charity. If you are helping someone, and you want it to be anonomous so that the glory is to God, not the public…how can this honour in the prommises to serve the lord justly done when so many people know so much.

It is simply an honour code as i see it, and i have seen and heard evidence where the clergy, and many layers going upward have seen or have been a part of these, and claim that there is nothing further to say, but that it is all within the church Laws, as well as Gods.

I hope you can go to your fellow Knights, or better yet, seek councel with a priest so that you can find out the churches perspective on this, and set your mind at ease…you deserve this, and so do your fellow members.

I will seek the thread, and when i find it, i will repost, as it was a very well spoken thread on the KoC’s points of views. You will learn much, and could PM any member that is on the forum for more indebth research…
