What Theological Contributions Have Protestants Made?

There were Catholic translations of the Bible in English as early as 700 AD.

The problem with the early Protestant translations was not that they were in English, but that they were mis-translated; for example, the famous “Sinner’s Bible” in which the Protestant translators rendered all of the Ten Commandments as “Thou shalt …” instead of as “Thou shalt not …”

Perhaps it would have been overkill to burn those guys at the stake (and I don’t know whether they were, or not), but I’m sure you would agree that something of a disciplinary nature was required in response to that.
The sinners bible was typeset wrong by the printer. It was not translated that way. I learned this is when I was in trade school for printing. 😉

and who said that the Bible was to be printed and distributed into the hands of people?

do you really think that this contribution did any good to the world?

look at Christianity today, everybody gets a Bible and think they dont need the Church and goes and build their own churches leading people into err.

no, thanks. no need for this contribution.
Wait a minute I was told on this forum that a Pope which one I do not remember gave indulgences for reading the bible. How can it be bad then?

Catholics on this forum read the bible and have their opinion of what scripture means.

Do you read the bible yourself?

If only 3 THREE of the founding fathers were Roman Catholic and 88 were Anglican/ Episcopal how can you get that the Constitution is based on the teaching of the Catholic Church. Actually only TWO (2) signers of the Constitution were Roman Catholic Daniel Carroll of Maryland and Thomas Fitzsimons of Pennsylvania. The only one of the 13 colonies that was set up as a palatinate that I can recollect was Maryland because of the founders of Maryland being Roman Catholic.

Are you getting this from the fact that all other Protestants were a break away from the Roman Catholic Church? Can you cite the source of your claims that America was founded on Catholic teachings?
No, i am not.

when Catholics came into this country they were persecuted and had no rights whatsoever.
eventually Catholics set up communities given people freedom to all to Worship. these communities were being noticed by many. that is how the Catholic Church influenced the constitution. based on the teachings of the Church.
also dont forget who was the founder of the land. a Catholic.

Wisdomseeker,
With all due respect, IF that is truly the way you feel how can you claim to be a truly practicing Roman Catholic? If you do not read God’s word for yourself and only expect the church to teach you what you need to know you are living out a very hollow and shallow faith. Look at it this way; lets say you go to mass on Sunday and maybe on a midday to give you the benefit of the doubt. That means you are only getting spiritually fed on God’s word two times a week. Do you feed your body physical food only twice a week and expect it to survive? How then would your faith be any different? You NEED to be reading your Bible DAILY for spiritual feeding of your soul.

Do you do the liturgy of the hours? Many Catholics I find do not and are shocked to find this tidbit in the catechism.
1176 The celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours demands not only harmonizing the voice with the praying heart, but also a deeper “understanding of the liturgy and of the Bible, especially of the Psalms.”

So you see the catechism is encouraging you to have a deeper understanding of the Liturgy, and of the Bible and of the Psalms. If you say you are trusting the “One Church Jesus founded to lead you” you would be reading your Bible.

You still have yet to cite the sources you are getting the information from. If you are referring to George Washington being Roman Catholic, he was baptized into the Church of England. His church of record is Christ Episcopal church in Alexandria Va. He is also known to have his own pew in St. Paul’s Episcopal in New York where he attended after being sworn in as President. So I question the validity of your claims. His freed slaves who converted to Catholicism portrayed him as being a convert on his deathbed but that does not make this country set up on Catholic principles. Washington was also known to be friendly and sympathetic to the Roman Catholic cause; once again this hardly makes him a Catholic.
Maryland was set up as a palatinate because of the Roman Catholic Church but not the rest of the colonies to my knowledge; hence the name MARYland.

You say that the Catholic church “set up communities.” Can you tell me where by name? Quakers set up communities also in Pennsylvania which offered religious freedom under William Penn not offered under the Church of England. The Anabaptist Amish and Mennonites who where fleeing persecution of the Roman Catholic church also found refuge in Pennsylvania, not to mention the Brethren that were also fleeing the persecution of the Roman Catholic Church. The Puritans settled in New England seeking freedom from the Church of England. This hardly qualifies the statement that communities were set up for religious freedom under Catholic principles.

Which “founder of the land”? Colombus? What the heck does this mean?

My original claim that started all this was that Protestants are responsible for and credited with the “crafting of the US Constitution.” You then claimed that Catholics were responsible for this. You were, and are, wrong about this. Catholics were only very very minimally involved in this, and no major player in the crafting of the US Constitution was Catholic.

Now you are simply retreating to this: “Well, the crafters cared about Catholic religious rights, and Cristoforo Colombo * was a Catholic.”

It would have been better if you had been kidding.*

I would be curious what communities you are referring to as well. Many of the early colonists were fleeing religious persecution from the Church of England and sadly even the Roman Catholic Church.
The founder of the land?? George Washington was Anglican/Episcopalian. It was believed by some that he converted on his deathbed to Catholicism but this is because of stories by his freed slaves that converted to Catholicism themselves. He was sympathetic to all religions including the Roman catholic faith but that does not make him a Catholic. I have even heard some wild tales that he saw visions of Mary on the campaign trail of the Revolutionary War but his diaries do not indicate such.

If you are referring to Christoper Columbus as your post is very vague he was Roman Catholic, but that hardly makes this nation founded on Catholic principles.

with all due respect. but what you are saying doesnt hold with me.
i have said what i want to say and i stand by what i said.
if you think that people depend on reading the Bible for Faith, we would have to say that those of old did not have any Faith and new nothing about Christ since the laity had no Bibles. i have no interest on any teaches unless it comes from the CC.
i dont care if protestants read the Bible all day long. it does not influence me a bit. it is better not to read and have it right then read it and get it wrong.

Peace.

I am curious to know why are you in the CC, since you dont seem to like the Church very much and dont believe what she teaches.

i sense your hostility towards the Church. but hey, i have seen many in here lately.

yes, the Bible says that Faith comes by hearing and by hearing the Word of God? the question becomes. who do you hear from? this still stands. it has not change. it is written. now, where do you see by reading the Bible? which is what you are advocating here.

the reason you use the Bible alone is because you dont believe there is a Church built by Christ that is commanded to teach all men, therefore you resort to Bible alone. hey be my guest. dont let me get in your way.

i will stay with the Church which is the plan of our Lord. hear the Church, hear the Son and the Father who sent the Son.

Is the Church supposed to be an option one picks from a menu because one “likes” it?

Is there anything you can read in life and be confident you are not misinterpreting it? Did you ever have to do a book report in school?

I believe the body of Christ makes up the church. I believe the bible is the final authority on faith and morals.

Amen to that. We are all the church, believers in Christ.👍

Where does the CC teach that Catholics crafted the US Constitution?

And why do you charge this person for being hostile toward the CC when all he did was question your erroneous claim about the religious nature of the crafters of the Constitution?

Amen to that. We are all the church, believers in Christ.👍
Not all Christian Churches hold and preach the full Deposit of Faith given by Jesus and handed on down through the Apostles, starting when our Lord commissioned them to do so on Pentecost, Peace and God Blessings, :)Carlan

I find it stunning to see Christians questioning whether fellow Christians should be allowed (or encouraged) to read the Word of God for themselves.

Like I said, the translation and printing of the Bible into English (which the CC also does–and sells) is one of the great theological contributions of Protestants to the world.

Like it or not.

Believers are all one in the body of Christ and as believers we are the Church. God Bless
