Ours started at about nine - well after dark. The lights stayed off until the Gloria. Our former parish priest didn’t start the Vigil till about eleven, but after being moaned at by several elderly parishioners he moved it to nine.

The Tridentine Easter Vigil at my commuter parish commenced at 11PM in darkness:D and the Mass ended at 145AM:eek:. More on my blog teddybaroza.blogspot.com
Alleluia! Alleluia! That’s wonderful.

My Byzantine parish started with Reading from Acts at 11:30PM, Matins and Divine Liturgy at midnight and was over before 3:00AM. After our feasting on everything we haven’t eaten since Feb 8 we were headed home by 4:20am. We had already had Vespers and Divine liturgy for 2 hours Saturday afternoon. It was a lot of standing for one day! 😃 Of course we also had services Th, two, and two services Fri with as many hours of standing, plus prostrations. And it all goes by way too fast…

(There’s a bishop in your photos but I didn’t see any mention of him in your blog.)

9 pm.

It used to start at 10 pm, and finish after midnight, but about 3 years ago they rolled it back to 9 pm. The main reason is that it is a Benedictine abbey, and a lot of the monks are elderly and found the later start time hard.

Ours started at 5pm. I live in a small Arizona town and our sundown was 6:45 that day. I had no idea that the Easter Vigil mass should be in darkness. We are mostly retired people here (not me though!) and that’s why we have early vigil masses all year. If Easter had come in March, then the mass would have started at 4pm.
I think I may ask our priest about this.
