What to advise my buddy seeking clarity

My buddy has had what he terms a religious epiphany, though he himself is a bit irreligious. Though we’ve talked about it extensively, and he was interested in talking with a priest, he was advised by someone to talk to people of every major faith on their take on his epiphany.

He asked me if I thought that was a good idea. I said, it’s a deep question, and I don’t know.

Is it? Effectively his epiphany was simply after a long stretch of hard times he “saw the light” of responsibility, basic human goodness, and a tenuous belief in God. And he wants to talk about that with, say, Jews, Buddhists, etc… don’t know what they’d really say, I didn’t think there was a whole lot for me to say in reply, but whatever.

Anyways, is this a good idea? And if not, what would I say that would make sense to someone who isn’t a Catholic? I’m not looking to proselytize him, as he is probably at a vulnerable point of his life and that would be taking advantage of his emotional weakness. But what are your thoughts?

Thanks.

invite him to Mass and encourage him to talk to a priest by appointment.

You could say that you can’t advise him to seek out other religions, because that is against your faith. And that you are more than happy to talk to him about Christianity, without any expectations on your part. He must feel free to talk about it and not feel pressured.

You could just encourage prayer in general, and see if he’d be interested in reading something like The Word Among Us or another lite Catholic meditation guide.
