I have a question about giving to street beggars. I have direct debits to charities and I do give to street beggars when I can, although I feel I should do more. My question is this, there are a couple of regular beggars where I work who approach me as I have given before, but I have a couple of concerns. One beggar I used to give to every day and see others also giving, I began to realise he must be making £5-10 a week from me and I couldn’t afford to keep it up daily.
Another beggar I used to give to I have stopped as I saw him going into a gambling/gaming shop which made me question the genuineness of his need.
A third beggar approached me in church whilst praying and asked for money, I gave what I had but then she began to ask me to go to the ATM to draw out more for her which I said I couldn’t do.
My concern is as a christian I want to give and help where I can but where do I stand if I decide not to give in the circumstances above. Should I save my money for charities and for giving to church.
I appreciate any guidance in with this.
