Hi, I am 15 years old and my dad is abusing my mom emotionaly. Every day they argue, every single day because my dad complains about silly things my mum does. I have read the signs of emotional abuse and it fits the situation. My father always denied going to a psycologist because he says he’s OK, I think he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Please tell me what to do! And pray for my family, please!

Without using disrespectful language, I would slam my hand down on something – LOUD – just to get his attention, and tell him his abuse needs to stop now. That’s what a priest told my aunt to do when my uncle-in-law abused the children. It’s a little different with you, but I would certainly put a stop to it, especially if you’re a boy. And talk to a priest.

If your father won’t go to counseling, encourage your mother to take that step and get counseling for herself.

You are the child in this situation, not the parent. You cannot take on the responsibility for your father’s actions nor are you responsible for your mother allowing it to continue.

Walk out of the room if these exchanges continue.

Some of the abuse has fallen onto us too. For example, my brother wants to give up tennis but is afraid of my dad’s reaction. He has been really hard on us all our lives. He once told my brother that he was dissapointed at him, heavy stuff, specially because he’s just 12. Also, he is always trying to make us believe that my mother is the responsable for the bad things that happen. I will tell my mother that I want all of us talking to him tonight. He must realised what he’s been doing.
