What to do if you can't get to confession right away and have a mortal sin on your soul?

HI, I live in a small town and need desperately to go to confession. My church does not have confession until Friday, and I do not really have the means to leave town and seek out another priest until then. Is there a prayer I can sayor something I can do to receive forgiveness until then, so that I may be back in a state of grace? I just don’t like going a long time when anything can happen, as you know. Thank you!

Recite what is known as a perfect Act of Contrition, recognizing that you are sorry for your sins mainly because of your live for God, and firmly resolve to go to Confession at the next possible opportunity on Friday.

This will not put you in a true state of grace, but it will show God your contrition.

Call the parish office and ask for a private appointment for confession. It’s pretty common, and I’m betting most priests would be happy to accommodate you.

You can say the Act of Contrition:
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

If you beg the pardon of God with perfect contrition (that which fills us with sorrow and hatred for sin because it offends God, Who is infinitely good in Himself and worthy of all love. -Baltimore Catechism) then you will not go to hell should you perish before Confession, but you still must have the resolve to go at the nearest opportunity.

Yes, you should do this if you can, or even if you just ask the priest about a half-hour before the Mass to hear your confession, that should be fine too. If it is truly out of the question to confess until Friday, than pray that God will grant you perfect contrition and pray an Act of Contrition prayer.This along, with the intention of confessing your sins as soon as possible will put you back in a state of Grace.

My advice would be to say the Act of Contrition also. Next I would see if you could set up an appointment with the priest to hear your confession.
