CHRIST IS RISEN!

And there is **NO GENUFLECTING **in a Byzantine church.

Also no kneeling from Paska (Easter) until Pentecost!:dancing:

In some parishes, there is no kneeling for Divine Liturgy at all:dancing:
CHRISTOS VOSKRES!
VO ISTINU VOSKRES!

I am starting to see, not because of Pat, the reasoning why a lot of our Eastern Rite Catholics don’t kneel. Would I be wrong to not kneel in the Roman Rite Mass anymore? It is making more sense not to kneel to me.

huh? Didn’t you just post a thread that you kneel on the floor, because a little discomfort is good for the soul?! confused

Hi Fox,

Kneeling is a bodily attitude of feudal respect common in the Middle Ages. It has influenced our liturgical poses.

Each tradition has its own way of showing respect or taking a prayerful attitude.

In the US, Latin Catholics kneel for the whole Canon. This is an Irish custom. Outside the US most Catholics kneel only for the consecration.

South,
Sorry for the confusion, I kneel during the consecration, and I kneel on the floors instrad of the kneelers! 🙂

Verb,
Ty brother for the info.

I always genuflect before the Tabernacle, and kneel at appropiate times, and will continue to do so, before the prisoner of Love.

To answer your original question, I think it would be improper not to kneel during a Latin Rite Mass simply because one thinks standing makes more sense. There are only a few situations in which one is not obliged to kneel, such as lack of space, physical inability, or “some other good reason”, determined only by the Bishop.

For reference, follow the directions provided in the General Instruction for the Roman Missal: usccb.org/liturgy/current/revmissalisromanien.shtml

After Resurrection Matins on Pascha, the local Byzantine priest reminded those present of the fact that the Council of Nicea forbade kneeling on all Sundays and all days during the feast of Pascha. I didn’t know that! Can anyone identify exactly when the West broke from that canon and why??? Nicea was an ecumenical council!!! How could we blatantly ignore one of its canons and get away with it?!?
