Long story. I’m a cradle Catholic who has been a member of another church for 10 years. Went to mass with my folks, who haven’t been for maybe 60 years. My dad sat at the end of the pew, and when communion came he was tapped on the shoulder to go, and he got up and got in line. Didn’t know what he was doing, and put the host in his pocket. Didn’t even remember what the host was. So when we got home, I got it from him, and am here to ask what I should do now? I didn’t want him to clean his pockets and just throw it in the trash. Please advise.

Alexandra,

First, I would like to sincerely thank you for your consciensious awareness of the seriousness of what you have and your desire to make things right!

If you haven’t been to confession in a long time (which I assume you haven’t based on the fact that you’ve been away from the Church) don’t consume it (which would be my advice if you were in full communion with the Church). I would suggest you immediately call the priest at the local parish (if you can’t get through to him, I’d try the neighboring parish if it’s close). Tell him what you told us and ask if you could bring it to him for proper handling. I’m certain he’ll thank you for your concern.

I guess I was so flabbergasted I never thought of that. I just knew that I had to get it, to be sure it was dealth with properly and with respect.

I know my folks haven’t been to mass since they began handing the host rather than placing it on the tongue, so my dad really didn’t connect that they were giving communion. Especially since it was not begin given by the priest, and was in the back of the church.
