What can I do when I feel despairing and numb to still honor Our Blessed Lord?

Do it anyway because he still deserves it even if I am struggling to understand his will. And, he will still hear my imperfect prayers even if they sound more like ranting against Him and wallowing in my own sorrow.

There is also one scripture I tend to meditate on that helps me through rough patches:
“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:6-7‬ ‭NABRE‬‬

Coupling my prayers and petitions with Thanksgiving (even if it seems like I’m grasping at straws) usually has the desired effect overtime. I think it is because it forces me to seek out the good even when it’s not obvious.

Anyway, this is what works for me. I hope it is useful for you.

Definitely this. I think being grateful is one of the biggest things to be happier/more joyful. (I admit I’m bad at this. It takes a lot of effort.)

I also find it easier to be happy when I have set prayer times (and set everything else times. I might be slightly neurotic). Having a schedule, especially for prayer, keeps me not only on track but it makes even the worst of days feel “solid”. There’s always something I can count on to be the same. And there’s a lot of solace in that, for me at least.

My two cents? Your post sounds like a line from the psalms, and your desire to honor Jesus in the midst of your despair and numbness like a prayer of adoration from the depths of your heart. That being said, what does the Lord have to say when you ask Him?

I would definitely recommend the daily Rosary as well as the Divine Mercy chaplet. They really do wonders!

Saint Jean Vianney famously said that when you find that you are unable to pray, you may ask your angel to do so in your stead (in your place). I prayed for my guardian angel to pray for me while I sleep as I cannot and it is in faith that my prayer was heard.

Are they ministers of Christ?
(I speak as a fool) I am more;
in labours more abundant,
in stripes above measure,
in prisons more frequent,
in deaths oft.

24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.
25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned,
thrice I suffered shipwreck,
a night and a day I have been in the deep;

26 In journeyings often,
in perils of waters, in perils of robbers,
in perils by mine own countrymen,
in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city,
in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea,
in perils among false brethren;
In weariness and painfulness,
in watchings often,
in hunger and thirst,
in fastings often,
in cold and nakedness.

28 Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily,
the care of all the churches.
Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?
If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.

Go for a nice walk; journal as to why, and lift this up in prayer: sadness, anger, numbness, abandonment…and most of all accept the constant silence and mystery and know that you are not alone and are heard.

Something that helped me with negative emotions was figuring out the primary or underlying emotion. Like I used to always say, I’m so stressed out! but then I realized that stressed out is more like a symptom than an actual thing, so I would have to ask myself what emotion was causing that.

Saying or thinking the name of the emotion really settles my mind when emotions are whirling everything up. If I don’t get the right emotion, nothing happens, when I hit on the right one, bang! my brain starts calming down.

So maybe you could incorporate that into your prayer? Help me, Holy Spirit, to figure out what I am feeling underneath. Because I find it helps a lot to be calm in my mind wwhen I pray.

At a recent Bible meeting, people were asked about their favourite verse, a lady said Psalm 24

19 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted,

and saves those whose spirit is crushed.

I felt confused and asked her why it was her favourite verse? She had been through university, was a senior manager, she had a lovely house and husband. She said, there was a time of desperation in her life and that verse helped her through it.

Hello.

Do you have depression? It might be worthwhile to see a therapist. Your numbness may be a sign of something else going on.

You are in my prayers.

To me numbness is a sign of the flesh pulling me. Look inwardly. Meditate. The Spirit is mightier than the flesh.
