What do you do when you are in an arguement with a Fundamentalist and no matter what scripture you give them, they say that in their interpretation it does not make the point that you say it makes? I have a guy who is fighting with me about James condemnation of Faith without Works. He says that James does not really mean what he clearly stated in scripture. What do you do with someone like this? Is there a way to reach them? I think that it is an issue where he just does not want to see the truth. Period. Any thoughts on this!

Thanks gang!

You’ve hit the nail on the head–he doesn’t want to know the truth. Indeed, he wants to convert you out of the Church. He isn’t prepared to be fair-minded nor open to any interpretation other than that of his sect because he believes his very salvation depends on his sect’s understanding of the Bible. If I were you, I’d ask him some basic questions about what is necessary for salvation and why he has to believe what he does. That might be a more fruitful discussion. And, of course, pray for him, which I have no doubt you are already doing. 🙂

Tell him that you take the Bible very seriously and cannot disregard so easily as he can God’s inspired word.

And Pray. Your job probably is not to see the fruit of what you are doing, but to plant seeds that, God willing, someone else will get to see grow.

God Bless,
Maria

No argument of years will ever work. The only way he will come to the Truth is with Grace from the Holy Spirit. you can only plant the seeds and pray.

  1. Where does he get the Authority for his interpretation? We have 2000 years of UNBROKEN Authority for interpreting Scripture.
  2. Pray!

When argument doesn’t work, take him out for a beer. You buy the drinks. No discussing of religion. If he doesn’t drink beer, you’ll have to settle for Starbucks.

You walk away. If he pushes it, you just say, “Hey, that’s the problem of private interpretation, I guess.” Militant heretics HATE it when they’re not being engaged. You’ll probably never see any evidence of a second thought with him, but I guarantee the truth will be under his skin.
