This is a hypothetical scenario… Don’t worry. I know how much you all hate hypothetical anything.

Anyways… none of my family members are homosexual, nor are being joined in “union” with another… But, because I am not 18 and under the care of my parents, if they told me I was to play at that type of service, could I refuse under any circumstances?

I guess if I was dragged there against my will, during the Bridal Mar-- I mean, Wedding Procession, I would probably substitute Dies Irae for that. 😃

We must always obey rightly constituted authority unless they are asking us to break the obedience we owe to a rightly constituted higher authority. Thus, we must pay taxes even though the government wastes the money on immoral things, but if Obama erected a statue of himself and ordered us to worship him (violating Divine Law) we’d be obliged to refuse, even to the point of death.

You’re under 18. Your parents are a rightly constituted authority, thus you are obliged to obey them (see the fourth commandment). However, if they ordered you to do something evil, to break the Divine Law, you’d have to refuse.

Thus, the question is, is playing the piano at a gay “wedding” evil? Answer that and you have your answer.

Why on Earth would playing piano at a gay marriage be sinful? Come on people, get real!

I didn’t say it was sinful, I said if it was sinful to play the piano at the gay “wedding” the OP would have to refuse.

How could playing the piano at a gay “marriage” be sinful? First, it could be scandalous for a good Catholic to be known to play at gay “weddings.” Causing scandal in others is a sin. Second, it could (if the gay couple thought his playing was supporting their union) be participating in the sin of another. Third, if the “wedding” was being held in imitation of a Catholic Nuptial Mass it would be simulating a sacrament - also sinful.

Basically, we want to support people but not their sins. Playing piano at a gay kids graduation party is supporting the person. Playing piano at a gay couples “wedding” (i.e. a celebration of their sexual relationship) is supporting a person’s sins. IOW, Love the sinner, Hate the sin.

Actually, even though your scenario is hypothetical, this type of scenario is popping up all over the country today, more often by substituting “state” instead of parents. The Supreme Court of the State of New Mexico recently ruled that a woman photographer who refused to take pictures of a “committment ceremony” of a gay couple several years ago committed a HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION according to New Mexico law (New Mexico law is actually quite vague concerning marriage - here the redefinition of marriage has been county by county, often ordered by single judges in the counties’ district courts). She is now appealing the decision to SCOTUS, based on First Ammendment grounds. If SCOTUS upholds the New Mexico law, that means that people in secular businesses will be required to violate their own consciences or face fines and/or prison time.

Telling someone they have an obligation to be a martyr is not a trifle matter and such advice should be tossed around lightly.

Spiritual directors and confessors should be consulted on obligations.

My DD asked her cousin to play the organ at her Nuptial Mass; he routinely played at Masses in his parish. He told her he didn’t feel capable of doing justice to the music she had selected. (We suspected he really felt uncomfortable playing in front of family members.).

She found another organist - no harm, no foul.

Not everything has to be a big deal.

It is participating in objectively sinful behavior. That is real. We are never to participate in sin or the sinful actions of others.

The term “Same Sex Marriage” is an oxymoron, so you don’t have to worry about ever participating in one. However, if people call a ceremony that and attempt to make you attend it… get creative and find a way out of going.

You cannot be forced to.
If you decline, and are threatened with a lawsuit, then theoretically claim you sprained a finger.

well, Lying is bad indeed and God would not want you to do it.

But there are many other things you could do to avoid it, maybe even with the “I got much important things to do” i mean doing your homework is much more important, i could even say that staying on your house sleeping is a much more important thing to do if you are feeling tired and need some rest.
