So, back to the original point…

Can anyone point out a listing of the appropriate gestures and postures for the mass. I am also interested in the various gestures people sometimes make. I have seen people make signs of the cross at certain points, others strike their breast, sometimes once, sometimes many times over, some do yet other things. Is there any reference that would suggest what the correct things are in this regard?

The only ones I normally use (during the mass) are the sign of the cross at the beginning and end of mass, the bow during the creed, the bow before receiving communion, and a sign of the cross after receiving communion.

I have heard mention of other things that were done in the past, but I don’t know if any of those past traditions are still in line with the norms.

striking the chest is still the norm in our church

my brother, my guide to all things trad Catholic, has a suggestion. he sent me two of those bamboo backscratchers with little hands on the end. Just hold them out on either side for the grabbers to take. If you’ve got a wave congregation, just hold them up and shake from side to side.

I’d like to meet your brother! 😃

I laugh about it, but it really isn’t funny…As God as my witness, the other day, I saw someone making the same gesture that I posted a picture of…I almost started laughing, but the disgust I felt wouldn’t allow it. I also see people almost falling over pews trying to reach into neighboring pews to hold hands with someone 10 feet from them. Luckily, my parish at home just got a very orthodox priest who leans towards the traditional side of things…but I still can’t help but drive downtown for the Latin Mass at St. Agnes…The Cathedral is a great place to go as well…the priest, a close personal friend of mine, is one of the greatest priest I have ever known…and it has a nice, reverent atmosphere.
You are really lucky that “someone” was suspended from this site.

She would have blown a gasket!
Personally, I think many of the innovative gestures can be likened to Sports or Broadway.
But that’s just my personal opinion.

God Love you! You are very blessed!

Might be interpreted as an orans posture and get you stared at real mean like.

The shaking may even get you labeled as a charismatic.

😛

LOL…God Love you too…hey, send me a PM and tell me who you were talking about who was suspended…I have an idea who you are talking about, but I am not sure…if it is who I think it is, she would’ve really flamed me. LOL Vivat Jesus, Sonny

I realized that I am in a better state of prayer when I join my hands and close my eyes. I keep my hands joined at all times when standing or kneeling. I do ignore people when they try to grab my hands for the Our Father. Some get pissed and don’t shake my hand at the sign of peace, I just pray for them. People are getting used to see my standing in that posture (I am a big man in one of the first pews), and a lot of older people are starting to feel free to do the same thing. The only “out of boundaries” thing that I do is to slightly bow my head when answering to the “Peace be with you”.

I just realized that what I am doing is not out of being pigheaded but because that it is the best way for me to participate to the Mass. I explained that to the children in my catechism class, and I hope that they will learn that reverence is not just a old rule but that it puts us in the proper position respect to the Lord and it allows us to be prepared to do His will. For the same reason I receive communion on the tongue.

I grew up with a strong sense of rejection for any form of authority imposed upon me, and its rules. However I know that Christ is one that I can freely accept or reject and I decided to be thankful for the gift He gave me and take it with all the rules that come with that loving yoke.

I can’t help it but the “Wonder Twins power activate” battle cry keeps coming to mind…Everytime at mass after the Our Father when everyone is holding hands, they start low then they shift up to the air when we get to “kingdom, power and glory, etc…”

I prefer to fold my hands in prayer. I know I’m missing out on the super natural powers generated by the joining of the hands, probably won’t be allowed in the Hall of Justice, eek, I always wanted to meet Aqua man… LOL!!

sorry, I just keep seeing the wonder twins when everyone starts throwing those hands high to the sky !!!

Carry on…😃
