In 1999, my step-daughter received her First Communion. Her mother had remarried a man who is mormon and had converted. Five months later, my stepdaughter also converted. (The whole story is for another thread.)

I had purchased a rosary on E-bay that was hand made by the seller. My stepdaughter really liked it so I asked the seller to make one for her. We gave it to my stepdaughter for her First Communion. I kept it in my room so my daughter (who was only three at the time) wouldn’t get to it. I found the rosary the other day and realized I don’t know what to do with it. It’s so beautiful and I hate the thought of it not being used. I hope when my stepdaughter gets older (she’s now 13) she will come back to the Catholic church. If she does, I will give the rosary back to her. But what if she doesn’t? And, in the mean time, should this beautiful rosary just sit in a trinket box?

I have three rosarys and, obviously, can’t use three at the same time. I just keep them in my jewelry chest.
One is so beautiful which was given to me by a non-Catholic friend who bought it for me in Budapest, Hungary. It is a truely rare piece and even if I never actually use it, will always treasure it. Not just because of it’s beauty but because of how I came by it.

I was talking with my husband about this. He made the comment that he doesn’t use all of his rosaries. I kind of looked down at the ground and he said “You use all of yours?” I have at least seven and I trade off. My mom even gave me her very first rosary that she received when she received her First Communion. It’s about 50 years old. I also sleep with one under my pillow. My daughter has started doing the same thing.

I like the idea of praying with my stepdaughter’s but I wanted someone else’s opinion. I guess I just wanted to make sure I was using good judgement. My husband and I both have strong feelings that she will return to the Catholic church. If/when she doesn’t, I will give her the rosary. But in the mean time, I think I will use it.

It would seem very approiate to pray WITH the rosary that you wanted to give to her and pray FOR HER with it.

I have 6 rosaries and have them close at hand, that way I can’t seem to lose them.
I never thought about putting one under the pillow, since I do tend to move quite a bit while I sleep.

There are also Catholic Missions who would love to receive a rosary. Perhaps, you could donate to one of them.

If your stepdaughter ever decides to come back to the church then keeping the rosary for her might be an example of your love.

Pray for them all, :gopray2:

and when you finally are able to give it to her you will have a wonderful testimony of the rosary’s value to share with her.

If you do not use them all maybe you would consider donating them to your parish. I am sure that there are some new people who might not have one.
Or you could send them to members of our armed forces who are away from home. I am sure many of them would be thrilled at receiving them.

In General, Places to donate rosaries:

Hospices, and Catholic Hospitals, or nursing homes with Catholic residents.

Any Right-to-Life Office, they can use them while standing out side abortion death camps.

Your grade school, and church. Someone in the parish may want one. Eapecially, First Communicants whose family can’t afford one. RCIA newly entered adults.

Any Catholic bookstore, maybe they can give them away to anyone who needs one…I’m thinking here like those penny change dishes you see at cash registers…something like that.

Any Marian shrine, of course!

Just a few ideas!

Wouldn’t that be beautiful.

Maggie,
I would save it for her for when she comes back… assuming that you are praying fervently…(on this Rosary)… for her return…:gopray2:

I love the idea of praying with this rosary for her to return to the Church.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

When we were clearing out my grandparents’ house after it was sold, I came across my late grandmother’s dresser drawers and in it was a rosary of hers. It was a dark grey and I remembered it from my childhood. I decided I didn’t want it because at that time, I had zero interest in ever coming to the Church. This was in March. I had been regretting not taking it since so much stuff was thoughtlessly given away by a cousin of mine. So last week, I was talking with my grandfather who had just settled in his new digs and we were talking about my decision to come back to the Church. Grandad said that he had one of my grandmother’s rosaries and asked if I wanted it. I knew then exactly which one he was talking about and of course I’m going to use it for my very first rosary. I’m going to pick it up soon. I’m thrilled that it wasn’t lost. Now if I could only get that white crucifix back…

Sorry if this is off-topic, but I had a rosary tale to tell.

I don’t think you post was off topic. Besides, I love hearing stories like this. I’m sure one day my stepdaughter will return to the church and I’m sure she’ll remember the rosary when we re-present it to her.

I have two rosarys and usually use one most because a very good friend made it for me and I treasure it. I my other one is also very important because it was my first one and a good friend gave it to me when she saw that I was becoming serious about becoming Catholic. So I have kept that one over my computer with the crucifix part hanging down towards the screen. I have also kept it on my bedside table. I like to put it anywhere that I can see, as a reminder of my new found faith.

You might want to consider getting a green scapular too, and when you pray the rosary for your stepdaughter you could pray the scapular prayer too.

I would keep it and use it every so often with a dedication to the stepdaughter’s conversion.

Buy a statue of the Blessed Mother and hang the rosary on her hands.
