Hey, I was just cleaning off the miniature “home altar” (for lack of a better word, for mine is humble to say the least) on my dresser and realised I still have palm from years ago. I was wondering, what are we supposed to do with the palm after it has become dry and brittle?

Catholic motherly advise from her mother, its bad luck to throw away palm.I believe they are right because I threw away some old palm and I have bad luck ever since.

I would take it outside and place it into the garden.Life will come from it.

I would never think of throwing it out  ! I was just wondering of a respectful way to dispose of the palm.

At our church, our priest asks us to bring in all our old palms and he uses those to make the ashes for Ash Wednesday.
Since I guess your priest doesn’t do that, ask him how you should dispose of your palms in a respectful way.

We’d been asked to bring any old palms we had to church to have them used for ashes. Perhaps that might be a possibility?

I’ve been told as has already suggested, to burn or bury them. Never throw a blessed item away.

Thomas is correct. They have been blessed and the proper way to take care of them would be to burn or return them to the ground.

Most churches will purchase their ashes instead of burning their old palms. But a few years ago my parish forgot to purchase them, so I began the tradition of burning the palms again. It makes for a nice close to ordinary time and the teens and the altar server enjoy it because they get to participate. It is one of the few times that the servers are able to lead the community in prayer at my parish.

But with that said, it is not easy to burn palms. They burn easy enough. But they do not render down well unless they burn pretty hot. They also burn with a very strong smell that does not easily clear. So if you plan to burn, do so outside and be prepared to take a shower and wash your clothes soon after because the smell stays with you.

So the best option is to dig a hole in your garden and place them there to help the soil. They will not sprout palm trees.

God bless and enjoy living your faith every day.

Just give it to your priest. Most of them have a reliable way to dispose of unwanted blessed items.

As Catholics, we don’t believe in bad luck. What you are referring to as “bad luck” might just be guilt, wishing you’d known the teaching of the Church before you did something wrong (but not sinful - you didn’t know any better), OR it could be a state of sin if for some reason you intentionally disrespected a blessed item with contempt.
