When you are accepted into a religious order, what are you supposed to do with your belongings such as: car, clothes, credicard, bank accounts, money, etc …?

Could you give them to anyone you wish?

Thanks!

Yes you can dispose of your belongings in any way you wish.
Most Orders will allow limited personal belongings to be brought with you. [The list will vary]

Personal Debts must be settled. [For Instance Credit Card Debt] Most people entering will have family or friends hold personal belongings for them until such time as the Candiate makes final vows. [Just in case one leaves the community for whatever reason]

[Again my apologies this is posted in laypersons terms Hope this helps a bit and begins the discussion… am sure a Religious can post more in Formal Terms]*

Blessings of Peace and Good!

at the abbey I am considering entering they hold your belongings in storage and you don’t have to get rid of them until final vows. I am not sure who you are then supposed to give them to, but I assumed it was the abbey. 🤷 I would feel I was cheating if I gave them to my family 😃 Poor Clare tobe may be right, however; maybe you can give them to who you want.

**It can be anybody. **

If you have your druthers, and want to make a BIG difference in the lives of underground priests…

I would say it would be a wonderful thing to make your best effort to sell what you can and donate it to the Cardinal Kung Foundation.

$10.00 can support a priest for 3 days…

Even if you are NOT joining an order, remembering this worthy, worthy effort in one’s weekly or bi-weekly paycheck will yield more than we will know about this side of heaven!

Thanks for the website! I am going nowhere yet! 😃 I’ll spend some time reading about it and hope that I could make some contribution.
God bless!

Not sure if I am adding anything new here, but each community expression of poverty differs slightly, and with us we are allowed to own our property, monies, whatever… but the administration of that is up to the designated superiour. At final vows would be when we would hand everything over to a common pot.

However, given our status as just having obtained Public Association status, we are some time away from implementing this ‘handing over’ of all goods. Until it actually is formalized, even after final vows we will continue to ‘own’ our stuff, but it is up to the superiour as to the disbursement of it, as it is even now.

I hope I added something helpful…

God Bless, Br. Alphonsus.
