I was wondering what you think a pregnant woman should eat on fridays during lent if she can’t eat fish? I’m concerned about getting enough protein. Can you eat eggs?

Absolutely!

To sum up fasting and abstinence requirements, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.
Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the evening—depending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal.

Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat.

One can understand why pregnant or child bearing age women should avoid most fish. Eggs, cheese, tofu, beans, peanuts, and some tree nuts are all excellent sources of protein. If one is concerned about the fat in diary products, there are skim and low fat milk products available for the same price.

Are pregnant women only allowed to eat one full meal also? I’ll starve!!

  1. Homemade macaroni and cheese: my mom always made this on at least one Lenten Friday, and it was something I always looked forward to
  2. Meatless omelette and whole-grain toast
  3. Veggie lasagna: like a regular lasagna, but with things like sliced mushrooms and zucchini, grated carrots, etc. in place of the meat
  4. Cheese or veggie pizza
  5. Bean, split pea, or lentil soup with a veggie broth base (Swanson makes a good veggie broth)
  6. Mexican feast: refried beans, spanish rice, tortillas, taco shells or corn chips, salsa and other taco fixings
  7. Tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches
See, dinner for all seven Fridays!

And no, I don’t think pregnant women are required to fast on Ash Wed. or Good Friday. You’re eating for two, and one of the two is growing very rapidly.

Pregnant women, nursing mothers, children under 14, those with serious medical conditions, and those people over 60 years old are all exempt from the fast and abstinence requirments. So, have whatever you would like!
