What to say?

I often encounter this question every time I defend my faith, Im a Catholic.

People often tell me that “Its not in the bible, it means its a Man made Doctrine.”
I tell them “Not all words of god are written in the bible, the whole world cant contain God’s words.”

But then again, i would like to ask for more help about this problem of mine.
what bible passages should i use?
what will i tell other people?

pls help.
 
Are you responding to other Christians, or non-Christians?

Typically this argument leads Catholic apologists into the thread of “where do you think the Bible came from?” - to demonstrate that without the Church the anti-catholic would have no Bible to use as the “only” authority.

My short response is “if everything Christian is in the Bible, how did the people of the first two centuries (after the death of the Apostles) know what they should believe and do?”
 
Go revealed Himself to us in three ways:
  1. Scripture, 2) Tradition, 3) the Church’s teaching authority.
Tradition is of course all the teachings of the Catholic Church. Use the Catechism of the Catholic Church as a tool. The Liturgy, the living Tradition of the Church, is where we come to know Christ in the “breaking of the bread” (Luke 24:13-35).

The burden of proof is on the individual that you are discussing this issue with. This person must prove to you that the Bible does not mention other means of God’s divine revelation. Here is a great tool, Scriptural Reference Guide, put out by Catholic Answers.

“So, by your own criterion, sola Scriptura is a made-man doctrine.”

This will provoke your interlocutor into misconstruing II Timothy iii, 16, which will in turn allow you to point out that it in no way teaches his tradition of men, and to respond with the truly Scriptural teaching.
