Say you’re in a long-distance relationship, and you talk to each other on the phone. What do you talk about? Do you ever run out of things to say? I guess it would depend on how often you talk on the phone. Anyway, (name removed by moderator)ut/advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Just share your daily experiences…
Stories about what you did, laugh about the guy picking his nose in traffic, your coworker who had a funny story to share, complain about your boss, etc, etc… you know, just everyday chat. Basic conversations like that can spark deeper discussions, etc…

My now-husband and I mostly courted over the phone and we never ran out of things to talk about, “shallow” and “deep.” Once we “got serious,” we talked each night for over an hour, usually. Plus, we e-mailed a few times a day as our work schedules permitted. It was hard to be apart.

If one does find that s/he is running out of things to say, I suppose it could mean one of two very different things: 1) you don’t share enough to seriously consider marriage to the other person and should consider moving on, or 2) you’re so much on the same wavelength that you need to start seriously talking marriage with the other person so that you can make a life together and never cease having things to talk about! 🙂

Peter and I met on Ave Maria Singles in the Fall of '03, were engaged by Christmas of '03, were married in the Summer of '04, and had our first baby in the Summer of '05. We’re now pregnant with our fourth, so we have no shortage of life experiences to talk about and enjoy together!

God is not going to hide His perfect will from those who sincerely seek it, so if a couple is praying and using their God-given gifts of discernment, they can have peace that what they are discerning is God’s will for them and that He will make a way.

I hope this helps. May God bless you!

Well, I would talk about things I heard in Mass, upcoming events, the news, hobbies, opinions on life issues, my hopes and dreams, etc…

Have you already covered all the childhood favorites? You really get to know someone when you know what their favorite TV show was or what their favorite candybar is.

Dh and I met in high school and had a long distance courtship over the four years in college on opposite coasts. As he was at the Naval Academy, we talked on the phone twice per week…for about 30-45 minutes. Some conversations were easy and some were slower but we always worked hard to fill the other one in on our everyday goings-on. I knew who his friends were and vice versa. We knew which classes we were taking etc. etc.

We’ve been happily married for 12 years now…married the day after he graduated!

My husband and I were in a long distance relationship for two years before getting married. We talked about everything, and nothing… and sometimes there were silences. To make thing interesting we sometimes had “dates” where we’d meet online and play an online game, or do a photo scavenger hunt and e-mail the photos and laugh about them while we talked. We also went and saw the same movie at the same time (i.e. 3pm for me, 6pm for him) and then talked about it on the phone afterwards. Sometimes these things seem cheesy, but a lot of times just talking on the phone can get a little lackluster.

The benefit to a long distance relationship was that we talked about EVERYTHING. We now have pretty good communication skills. 🙂

Twenty-one years ago, DH and I got engaged and he lived in the same city I did for about six months (he was undergoing chemotherapy for Hodgkin’s disease) and when he moved back home (about 80 miles away) we talked EVERY night and I don’t remember ever running out of things to say.

Twenty years of marriage later, we still call each other from work just to say “hi” and hear each other’s voices. Still haven’t run out of things to say. For instance, he called me while I was at work just to tell me that while he was out on our back deck, he saw a herd of deer come up from the creek… and he wished I was with him to see it, so the next best thing was to share it with me while it was fresh in his mind.

When you love someone, there are NO trivial topics of conversation!

My boyfriend lives 75 miles away, I don’t know if that qualifies as long-distance but it certainly seems far considering that we started dating while living on the same (small) campus. We talk basically every day for probably an average of an hour. Some things we talk about:
  1. Daily events. Like, “I went to the post office today” kind of things.
  2. Memories. Today we spent probably an hour talking about the first 6 months or so after we met, when we hardly ever talked because we were both so shy. (We got over that in time. :))
  3. Our hopes and dreams for the future.
  4. Random topics that leap to mind. Like politics or philosophy.
Some days we can talk for two hours without taking a breath. Some days we talk for fifteen minutes and then can’t think of anything to say besides, “I miss you”. I don’t worry about occasionall lulls in the conversation. Some days you’re in the mood to talk and some days you’re not. For me the important thing is just calling, saying “Hi, how are you?” Just touching base and making sure everything’s okay.

Thank you all for your responses! I’m sure I’ll be making use of this tonight.

OK, the call turned out to be over 3 hours, so it definitely worked! I guess my next question is - is that too long? Thanks.
