What to talk to spiritual director about?

I think what I want is for him to ask me questions that open up conversations about the problems I’m struggling with in the hopes he has help to offer.
For what it’s worth, my director usually starts our sessions by asking “what would you like to talk about today?” In other words, it’s totally my agenda. And part of my preparation before we meet is to ask myself the same question and figure out what I want to talk about.

I don’t think it would be a good use of time to play 20 questions to figure out where we’re going that day.

After reading some comments here I finally told myself enough is enough and I texted my brother what I’ve been dealing with and he gave me some very good advice. I’ve been struggling with having zero self-worth

What you and the priest talk about is confidential and the priest can’t talk to anyone about it. I have found priests to be excellent to talk with regarding my “issues” and they know that something is bothering me simply by looking at my body language and how I express myself. I think your priest sees this too. He is there to help you reach heaven and be in the presence of God forever.

To connect to the poster who wrote about building a church. First there needs to be a solid ground if there is going to be a building that will stand against heavy winds and rainfall, i e our trials in life. You are a young adult and face conflicting messages from the secular world with what the Church teaches. Try to see SD as to have a solid ground. SD is a help for you to grow into the Matthew God had in mind when He created you.

You need to be open with your spiritual director in order to get anything out of it. He will not think you are weak if you discuss the things in life you are struggling with. On the contrary, he will be glad to know that you want to work on your issues.

He is well aware that everyone has problems and nothing you say will shock or disappoint him.

My spiritual director is a priest and he knows me better than anyone else. He has seen me when I was angry, sad, happy, depressed, etc. He has seen me cry on occasion. He knows I have a variety of struggles and issues like everyone else does.

How did you go about going for spiritual direction ? Did you just ask your priest ?

Yes I asked my priest, he has known me personally for 10+ years so it was easy enough to ask. You can probably ask the parish office

Not all priests have time to be spiritual directors or they have other reasons for declining, but one can always ask.
