I’m here in S. California for a week or so and was wondering what I ought too see while I’m here. Maybe not just holy places, but mostly that.

So far, I went to the Cathedral for San Bernardino, Our Lady of the Rosary, I think it’s a beautiful little Cathedral and I really like it, but what about the other cathedrals and places of interest should I visit? I get confused about all the different diociese in the L.A. and surrounding area. Which Cathedrals in the area are must sees? Etc.

Also, I’m thinkiing I’d like to stay maybe a night or two a the Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside. What do you suggest? Also, Sea World or San Diego Zoo?? lol

Thankyou.

Hi Jamal,

Here is a link to Trip Advisor, with ideas on places to visit in the San Diego area:

Edited to add that I would go to the zoo, since you asked! 🙂

I have been to LA and the surrounding areas in the past, but I have never been to the San Diego area. I have heard that it is beautiful.

I hope that you have a great time while you are there.

God bless you, and have a fun time, and a safe trip back home. 🙂

Hey Jamal!

Welcome to Southern California!

You can’t go wrong with Prince of peace abbey. It’s beautiful. There is also Mission San Luis Rey down the road from Prince of peace you can stay at. It is one of the California missions founded in the 1700’s and it is beautiful.

The Cathedral In LA Our Lady Queen of the Angels is a new beautiful Cathedral. If you head that way it’s worth a stop.

It sounds like your heading more toward San Diego. So in that case, I would recommend the Mission Bascillica in San Juan Capistrano. There is an old dilapidated mission there and a newer Bascillica that is very beautiful.

Also mission San Diego is a small quick stop mission.

I would recommend the San diego zoo or wild animal park(safari park). They are both fantastic. Sea World is an expensive commercial tourist trap. And yes Blackfish was dead right about them.

Stop at our beaches, they are all good, the water is warm and the weather hot right now!

Not sure if you like beer but there are lots of craft breweries around. Stone in Escondido is the biggest.

Let me know if you need more advice, I’ve lived here all my life .

Oh and eat lots of mexican food. Find some good hole in the wall places!

Well, certainly only go to the Los Angeles Cathedral (aka the Taj Mahony) if you are one of the five people in the world who appreciate modern art…

But, seriously, the real gems of Catholic California are the Spanish missions, dotted throughout the entire state. Visit those, and you won’t be disappointed.

I must be one of the 5…I find the Cathedral in LA Exquisite!

Prince of Peace Abbey is great and you might like Mission San Luis Rey next door. If there are children in your party, LEGOLAND is a blast.

Even if you hate modern architecture, it’s worth a visit to the cathedral in Los Angeles to see the tapestries. They’re beautiful and inspiring! I agree with those who have mentioned the missions. Any of them would be worth a visit.

Thanks guys, I think tomorrow I will go to the Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral even though I’m not a big fan of modern architecture. I’m sure there is beauty to find if one looks for it.

Hmmm after being in the L.A. area for a few days I already feel like i need to spend a week just staying at the Prince of Peace abbey recollecting myself. 😛 Seriously.

I’ll keep all these ideas in mind. Thanks again.

P.S. I think I’ll go for an early morning (5 am ) run on Newport beach tomorrow also! Should be fun.

The tapestries in the sanctuary are really great. The artist took people off the street, told them a little about the saint, then dressed them in what the saint would have worn and then told them to stand how they thought the saint would stand. He then photographed them. The human connection really comes through that way.

The garden was nice and fountains, and the mausoleum was very beautiful.

Enjoy! They have mass every day at 12 and confessions daily from 11-12 if you’d like to participate in that. There is also parking validation if you go to mass.

Check out Olvera Street too, or go to the observation deck at the top of LA city hall.

Philippe’s is close by and world famous for their french dip. They actually invented the French dip long ago.

I love going downtown…lots to do and see. If you find a good parking place, take the subway around and walk and enjoy downtown.

Also, while I enjoy Prince of Peace abbey, consider staying at Mission San Luis Rey. It’s a really amazing experience and the food is awesome!
