What to wear?

I’m REALLY sorry if this is in the wrong place, I honestly couldn’t find an area this obviously goes in. :S

Basically, I was raised by a Catholic mother and Methodist father; they couldn’t decide what to raise my sister and I as so we were never baptised. My mother rarely “practiced” or observed beyond Easter and Midnight Mass. When I was a younger teen I attended RCIA classes but moved away before I’d “gotten very far.”

I would like to approach my local church in hopes of attending these classes again and hopefully becoming baptized. The problem is that it’s been very long since I went to any “basic” mass or classes, I don’t know how to dress as a 22 year old female. I don’t think I even own a skirt or dress . . .

First of all, Welcome! Glad to have you on the forums!

I would say, don’t worry too much. In most masses there will be quite a variety of dress, from very casual to a nice dress. I usually shoot for the middle, a nice pair of pants and a plain shirt. I don’t do much in the way of dressing up, ever, so this is about right for me. And it you are very worried, I’ve found, in my parish at least, that Saturday evening Masses tend to lean more to the casual side, so good jeans and a decent shirt are quite normal then.

Just wear something reasonably modest, IE no spaghetti strap tops, plunging necklines or short shorts and you should be fine. While I think that skirts and dresses are ideal you can be modest in pants, just don’t wear hip huggers that are skin tight.

wear whatever you have that is neat, clean and modest. when you have been coming for a while and feel ready to invest in one good “church” outfit, look at what other women your age are wearing, reject what is immodest or inappropriate (bare midriff, too tight, too casual for your part of the country) and select something similar. You can’t go wrong with ordinary business dress.
