Millions fall into this category. For all of us that watch tv on a daily basis, if weāre being honest with ourselves, I donāt think we could quit television cold turkey. I know I couldnāt. I donāt think watching television in of itself is a bad thing thoughā¦It just depends on what youāre watching.
Through high school and early college, I watched a
lot of TV. I watched several primetime shows each night of the week (and usually was taping one while watching another). On average, I think I watched about 3-5 hours a day (which doesnāt include the hours and hours of video game play in addition to that

).
Then, halfway through college, I decided to give up TV cold turkey for three weeks as a sacrifice for those who were about to go on a retreat (with the stipulation that I would not record anything to watch later, either, as that would sort of defeat the purpose). For three weeks, every hour I normally spent watching TV, I spent in prayer in front of the Eucharist (yes, I was in the chapel a
lot!).
It was really during this time that my faith was awakened from dormancy. God gave me answers to many of the questions that had plagued me for so long regarding Jesus, the Church, and the Bible. I did a lot of spiritual reading and said a lot of rosaries.
At the time, I thought it would kill me. There were some shows that, previously, I had never missed an episode for the five, six, even nine seasons the shows were on the air. Before, I felt almost like a slave who was āobligatedā to watch these shows for as long as they aired. (Once I started watching a show, I found it hard to stop). But after 3 weeks with no TV, I felt completely free. After that time, I no longer cared so much about the shows, and I continued not watching TV for the most part. I did keep watching āThe Simpsonsā (and it was
years before I ever caught those three episodes I missed), but after a couple years, I dropped that show as well.
Of course, five years later, I started dating my wife, and got back to watching TV again.

But my mindset is a little different now. I donāt feel quite the same ācompulsionā as I used to.
Anyway, this is a long answer to the question of whether or not a TV addict can quit ācold turkeyā. My answer is āYes, they canā.
