Hi
My favorite TV show right now is NCIS - there seems to be less depravity than most of Law & Order. I’ve read that Mark Harmon is Catholic and I watch the show closely for signs but I can’t swear I see any.
The 11th Hour seems to have some very pro-life themes - as opposed to House which I love but his pro abortion stance gets really old - I was amused to realize a few days ago that 11th Hour had a show discussing umbilical cord stem cells while House was ‘pushing’ an abortion.
My husband loves Criminal Minds, and George Lopez as well as NCIS.

I Googled the bit I bolded above, it seems he is Catholic, altho’ I can’t find a primary source.

I can’t believe the guy is pushing sixty. I should have looked so good at thirty.

Saying Seinfeld is about nothing is like saying our lives are about nothing - of course they aren’t, and of course it isn’t.

The show, like a lot of good satire, is a mirror that reflects our small-minded obsessions and pettiness back to ourselves through the medium of humourous exaggeration (ie making us look slightly worse than we really are for purposes of getting laughs - such as the hours-long standoff between two cars over a parking space). A bit like Jack Benny exaggerating his stinginess with money to get laughs.

These folks did and said all sorts of things that most of us have thought at some stage but not said - a la the ‘ugly baby’ episode, is there no-one who hasn’t at some stage seen a kid and thought they were ugly, but not dared to say so?
I haven’t read this whole thread yet, but I’ll go back and read it. I just want to comment while I see this post.

I consider LilyM one of the intellectual, reasonable, trustworthy posters on CAF. I really pay attention to her posts and try to follow the advice that she offers.

I think it’s interesting that she feels that Seinfeld had a lot of value, while I, a big Family Guy fan, consider Seinfeld filthy, smart-mouth, stupid kids’ humor. I wouldn’t watch it if I was being tortured.

I can’t stand any of the characters. I think the plots are stupid, the dialogue sounds like it was written by a drunk or someone on drugs. And I just can’t see any redeeming value in the episode.

But…on two other threads, I am a vigorous defendr of Family Guy! I think it’s worthwhile and valuable and everything LilyM says about Seinfeld!

It just goes to show that EVERYONE will have a different reaction to media, and no one can state that “I am correct and you are not correct” or “I am following the teachings of the Church and you are not.”

I think it’s just a question of our reference points. For some reason, Seinfeld strikes a chord with LilyM, while for me, it breaks all the strings in the piano. Just the opposite for me and Family Guy.

I love the Sunday night adult cartoons, but if there are good sports on (e.g., the NCAA Men’s Tournament, or Sunday night football), I don’t usually get around to watching them, even though they are TiVoed.

Figure skating if it’s on, but now you can subscribe to icenetwork.com for $30 a YEAR and watch almost ALL of the figure skating in North America, including Sectional competitions, and ADULT competitions (not XXX rated! I’m talking about competitions involving men and women who are adults, e.g., my husband and his friends).

icenetwork technology isn’t perfect yet, but it will get there. I predict that the time will come soon when all of our television will be viewed via computer.

Other than that, I watch The Unit, the absolute best show on TV. This is a show where you won’t see “faith-bashing”–just the opposite. And you won’t see wimpy, hen-pecked men and shrewish, sex-starved women, and wise-mouthed little “children.” The actors in this show actually went to Iraq last year and spent two weeks with American troops, and they are planning another trip back. Supposedly American military bases all over the world tune in to watch this show. It’s hidden away on Sunday nights (after the cartoons and after football or basketball), but it’s worth taping. NOT a children’s show, but perfect for teenagers, including young teenagers. Lots of good discussions. Might be tough for a military vet, especially the funerals.

And my husband and I have committed to American Idol this season (after not watching any episode last season). We really like all the candidates this year, but we are actually calling and voting for Adam Lambert! I also would love to see Danny Gokey, the youth pastor from Milwaukee, win.

I don’t watch much TV but I do enjoy 24, the Simpsons, American Idol (because my DW really enjoys it, I tolerate it), NOVA, Top Chef, Ice Road Truckers and The Most Dangerous Catch.

What is Ice Road Truckers? Is it a cable network show? I’ve always liked trucker shows (Movin’ On, etc.)

I saw a comedian once on TV, he mentioned how silly it was the way some people name their newborns. Like, “Why did you name your kid Lawrence?” “Well, he looks like a Lawrence.”

The comedian said, " ‘Looks like a Lawrence’? Folks, newborn babies look like one of only three things:
  • Winston Churchill
  • Mahatma Gandhi
  • A boiled chicken."

Just curious what tv shows people in here watch on a consistent basis. I watch a bunch of different shows from 24 to King of the Hill as well as religious programming such as The One True Faith with Michael Voris. How about the rest of you? 😃
The only two dramas that I watch with any regularity are Lost and Mad Men. I also like to watch those cooking shows on PBS – my favorite tv chef is Jacques Pepin.

I like many shows on EWTN, I don’t watch many current shows, most of the ones I really like are older shows like I Love Lucy, Leave It To Beaver, Full House, Family Matters, Drake and Josh and some others.

Current Shows: NCIS, Criminal Minds, Smallville, The Office

Reruns: most of the Star Trek series, All In The Family, Everybody Loves Raymond,
X-Files

General: lots of sports, history channels, science, military, C-SPAN
