My wife and I attend the Novus Ordo Mass, but we are trying to learn Latin so we can pray in Latin like Pope Benedict has requested. We also want to learn to say the prayers in Latin in imitation of the saints.

We have responsibilities at our parish and can only go to the Latin Mass celebrated by FSSP once a month. We figure being exposed to the Mass in Latin will help us learn, if even once a month.

We’re new at this and were wondering what type of Missal do we need?
Is it “one size fit’s all”? Or do we need a new missal for every cycle? Any (name removed by moderator)ut would help. Thanks.

You will only need one missal. In the TLM, there is only one cycle of readings, so they remain the same every year. Here is one link to a 1962 daily missal. I am sure a web search would find other possibilites for you. baroniuspress.com/category.php?wid=59&cid=2

If they are more then you want to spend, there may be other, smaller missals with the propers (which includes the readings) for only Sundays and possibly holydays of obligation.

Baronius Press has a great Missal but I prefer the Angelus Press missal (about $60.00 for either) I just think it is better quality. Now the big “HOWEVER”. Why don’t you buy a St. Joseph’s Missal off of Ebay. Save a bunch of $$$$$$$. Or buy the red missalette from Tan Books. I think they are only about $6.00 each. They don’t contain the Propers but they are handy in learning the Mass in latin. For the OF Mass in latin/english I use the Adoremus Hymnal. ( no readings but the rest is there in both latin and english). About $15.00.

Just to clarify, are you looking for a missal that has the Novus Ordo Mass in Latin, or the Traditional Latin Mass? I ask because I don’t know of a missal that has the Novus Ordo in Latin, although I’d like to have one.

As for the TLM missal, I highly recommend Father Lasance’s missal. I have the other two most popular TLM missals (Angelus and Baronius), but I’ve found it much easier to follow along with the TLM with this missal. It is according to the missal of 1945, however, so you should be aware of that should you purchase it.

Thanks:thumbsup:

This has been alot of fun for my wife and I. It has been a good way for us to bond and learn something new together.❤️

One of the parishes that I went to fore TLM had little red paperback Latin-English missals, for sale (Or to borrow) for $5 in the Vestibule. The Church had the day’s readings on brochures. It worked well enough, I only went to TLM about once every four months anyways.
I was lucky enough to find one in a Junk Shop for $1. It’s a 1961 Maryknoll Missal, with readings, prayers, et cetera.

angeluspress.org/oscatalog/item/8043/1962-roman-catholic-daily-missal you can find a missal there

however most of them will have the little red missals so you will have to just listen when they sing the readings. if they dont sing the readings in english most probably they will say them just before the homily

The Gregorian Missal from Solesmes has the Mass of Paul VI in side-by-side Latin and English, as well, of course, as all of the Gregorian propers for the Mass. You can buy it, e.g., on Amazon, or download it for free courtesy of Solesmes and the CMAA here. (It’s intended for chant scholae, though, not Joe Pewwarmer, so it lacks the readings, although it gives the citations.)

I’ve been attending the Latin Mass daily for the last 4 years. I started out knowing nothing since I was also a new convert. The following helped me tremendously…

If you’re beginners, I’d recommend getting “The Traditional Latin Rosary” on DVD from Pro Multis Media at www.promultismedia.com. It has English or Latin subtitles and you can say it along with the priest on the DVD to get the correct pronunciation. I learned the basic prayers very quickly that way and it’s a good way to get started.

As for a missal, I personally like the “St. Andrew Daily Missal” from Bonaventure. I have a couple of the others mentioned, but I find this one the easiest to use.
:):)🙂
