What type of relationship does your local Churches have?

Do the Churches in your area get along with each other?

In my own town we have always had a very good relationship with each other, we have a town church forum and the local priests and ministers are very good friends with each other. The church forum is made up of the established churches i.e. the Catholic, Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian. They would hold cross community events such as opening their churches to all the public, having talks on historical events and inviting different faith leaders to come to each others churches every Christmas to wish a happy new year.

There is other churches however who would keep to themselves such as the Free Presbyterians, Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses and Baptists. None of them will join the church forum mostly because the Catholic Church is involved, at least to my understanding. They wouldn’t take part in the organised events as well.

How does your local churches interact with each other, do they get along with each other or do they have a bad relationship with one another?

I am curious whether or not if what we have in our own town is common or not.

I know the Catholic, Anglican and United Reform churches in the town center get on well. They have even had ecumenical healing services and such in the past. Largely it was the old Catholic priest who left a few months ago that seemed to hold this group together.

My former parish was in a fairly rural area, and the Monsignor used to allow any denomination who was building a church to hold their services in our parish hall. As a result, he was famous all over the country for his kindness, and we had to bring in closed circuit tv for his funeral. They shut sown the highway, and he had 70 priests and hundred of people of all faiths in attendance at his funeral.

There is a local “clergy association” involving Episcopal, Methodist, Baptist, and Comgregational clergy. With one exception, the local Catholic priests don’t attend the group’s monthly meetings, but do send their deacons. “Interfaith events” such as a Crop Walk and Carol Service are typically shown in the Catholic bulletins in town however.

Yes, they all seem to have a great relationship with one another. And every year before Thanksgiving one of six or seven churches nearby, Catholic and Protestant, host a get together for a Thanksgiving service for all those churches.

We get along quite well with the other churches in our area.

We have 6 different churches who have joined together to create a “Resale Shop” and a Food Pantry. This is primarily staffed by volunteers from all of the churches.

During Lent we have Ecumenical Stations of the Cross. We take turns going to each of the churches.

On a more local community level, we and the Lutheran Church advertise different events and fundraisers. We also support their efforts with our attendance, as they do ours.

We have an Area Interfaith Council where I live and it’s been around for forty years or so… Membership includes representatives from Christian churches including Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutheran, Episcopal, Catholics, Orthodox, Unitarians…and non-Christians such as Jews, Baha’is, Muslims, Sikhs… Buddhists and Hindus sometimes participate.

Following the 12/2/15 terrorist episode in San Bernardino members of the Interfaith Council participated in two memorials at local Islamic Centers. There are also representatives from local government as well as State Senate, State Representative and Congressman offices.
